Finally doing PCV - needed it big time
Hey guys have car apart and trying to wrap up this job. Can I spray a little gumout carb cleaner in the intake valves, they look a little gummed up, also how far back should I be able to stick a screw driver into both engine block ports after cleaning the gunk out? I cleared the bottom port and I did the tube test and when I blew into it I could hear oil gurgling in the oil pan. Thanks!

Volvo officially tells you to remove the flame trap and discard it.

The top port isn't very deep, like 3 cm. Also I always try to get a little handheld mirror to view directly into the ports, and be satisfied they are clean.
Agreed throw away the flame trap disc, all it does it get clogged.

Thanks guys that’s what I figured.
This system was really clogged up. I have no idea if it was ever done. The lower port in the box was completely jammed with what looked like wet charcoal. The old box seems like it weighs 25%+ more than the new box and it’s oozing with black crud. The bigger short tube that goes to the driver side mid engine block was not blocked. The other tubes and piping from the box to the different locations were clogged almost 50-60% and most of the hoses were brittle and hard.
I carefully cleaned the lower block port with carb cleaner and a sharp pen knife. I did the hose test and blew into it when it was all clear and heard oil gurgling in the block - I assume that is what should happen?
Will be putting it all back together tomorrow. Some of the valves in the intake ports had a little more black fouling around them than others - should I spray some gumout into the intake ports or just leave it alone? I’m not getting any codes for valves but they look dirty. See some pictures attached:

Your gurgling description sounds like you have it all set. Port looks good (last pic), if you are buttoning up tomorrow I might soak it one more time with Gumout etc to dissolve as much as possible. Unless you're keeping the oil clean ...
I've never sprayed the valves with the IM off probably can't hurt (again, may need to change the oil in that case). The valve stem seals are up above and not likely to suffer much even if they don't like the carb cleaner.

The oil will need to be changed either way. There will be stuff pushed down into it when blowing. So might as well try to push it all down then change the oil.
You can use plastic tubing to clean the passages, push it in so that the dirt is caught in the tube then cut the top off and repeat.

Looks like you got to it just in time.

Yep got it buttoned up earlier today. Glove doesn’t inflate (slightly sucks in) and no smoke from the dipstick. Little bit of soot and fine smoke at startup, but I’m sure that was normal after doing this.
Def. going to have the oil changed tomorrow. Need to drive about 50 miles of highway tonight to get back home so hopefully that might give it a chance to heat up and let the system do what it is supposed to do, as my normal trips are very short drives.
Thanks again for all your help everyone. Anything other than the oil / filter change I should keep an eye on this week?
