ABS Module desperation

Post by redbrick »

I'm unable to remove the lower front screw from my ABS module. It's head is stripped and the bolt is seemingly in way too snug. The other 3 came out pretty easily but all had sort of damaged heads. Looks like they have been in and out a few times.
At this point I'm at a total los for how to get this bloody thing out. I'm going to try epoxying the torx socket to the bolt head "stump" to see if I can get a few more turns. Does anyone else have any tips? This is the hardest "easy" job I've run into lately.

Sorry to hear of your trouble. I'll likely be doing this same "easy" repair in the near future. Your epoxy idea is good idea...hopefully that will work. My only other idea would be to use a small locking needle nose plyer to bite onto the stump. I think I've also read others cutting these out, but I'm not sure how that would be done.

It was a long shot but after spending literally hours trying to remove this bloody thing I am running out of ideas. I'm going to a hardware store to look at tools. Hopefully there is something that I can get a grip on this thing with. Pliers don't do it. I've been quite sucessfull pinching my finger though. I may need to use a dremel to grind the head off (using a mirror to see of course  ) and then remove the stump.
Anyone got a spare bolt they would be willing to spare?

Good luck. Hopefully the auto parts store will have a clever idea (or clever tool). Let us know how it goes...

Dremel or die grinder to take the head off will work fine. Take one of the bolts with you to the hardware store to match it up for a replacement.

I ended up cutting the bolt. What a major PIA. Once I got things out I could see what was holding it. The bottom front bolt was corroded right down to the threads. I presume that this is why the bolt would not turn out and also why the head was stripped. It's amazing to me that there are no seals or gaskets in this assy. Water has whicked in. And why would they use the torx head on such a small bolt? Bazaar.
Anyway, the hours I spent hugging my aircleaner did have one upside. I spotted my next project. My top motormount is shot.
