Getting a used ignition coil from the junkyard?

Post by oragex »

I didn't realize until today, but there seems to be different numbers for ignition coils, depending on the engine

Bosch 30713416 for N/A, 2.4t and 2.5t https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 16#fitment

Bosch 30713417 for R and T5 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 17#fitment

Don't know if these are interchangeable but worth getting the right number for the right car

While there, I shot a small video with a small tip on how to spot a good coil at the junkyard www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rhGbaV9nnk

May as well have a look of how to spot the bad coil when it starts to misfire www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnYUQh23p7Q

The cylindrical part and the boot around it that extend down to the spark plug are different lengths. I believe the connector is has a different 'key' (prevents the connector from seating into the wrong style coil pack). Beyond that I don't know if there are other technical differences such as spark output etc. Needless to say, it's best to use the correct coil pack.

My mechanic once told me coils are binary -- either they work, or they don't. Don't know if that's correct. I've never had to replace an ignition coil on a Volvo and I now have an original coil that is c. 20 years old. For that reason, I've never attempted to harvest coils from junkyard cars, but I wouldn't stand in the way of anyone who wanted a spare just to be on the safe side since they are probably pretty cheap at yards.

Not really.
But I suspect that mechanic might have been a little bipolar based on the level of objectivity. I think it's been established that we tend to be a little bit OCD here. So we're likely to have trouble going along with simplistic 'works or not' or 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' approaches.

I have a set of coils I picked off a 2005 Volvo S60 2.4t but never used and now have a T5. If anyone needs them I'll sell them for what I paid $14.57 each and donate half of the money to MVS. Buy all 5 and I'll cover shipping. I would like to see them used rather then sitting in my attic parts bin.

Brand: Volvo
Part No: 30713416

Full disclaimer, as orangex video mentioned, all these coils develop cracks right above the right hole. I double checked the 5 and all have very very small cracks there. Unless you purchase new all will have some small cracking in the casing where orangex showed. If you have any issues with them I'll refund for any problem ones. Just would like to see them used then in the trash.

I live in SoCal with 6 different LKQ Pick-A-Part within 30 minutes so my attic is full of stuff I need to clear out that no longer fit the '05 T5.

The cracks grow larger and will misfire. I just changed one out on my T5 today......cracked. i have never seen a badly cracked coil NOT misfire.

The 9125601 and 30713416 have a different boot length. The coilpack body is identical. You can put a later one in an earlier car but not vice versa as later ones are shorter. Longer ones won't screw down in a later car without considerable force.

You can purchase the longer boots from Amazon in an AC Delco brand for $10 or so.
