Shift knob removal - 99 C70/S70

Post by DenverC70 »

I assume the answer to this question is not unique to the C70, so I posted it here. On a '99 C70, how does the shift knob come off? I've read some things online about at least on 850s it's ruined if you take it off. Is that true of C70s too?

This is the VADIS instructions for the S/V70. I couldn't find anything for the C70 but would assume they are the same. There is no mention of using a new knob on replacement.

That's how I did mine when I replaced it with a new one. C70 is the same. The force to pull it loose is considerable. I ended up using a crowbar with a large gap to pull up with...Oh, and don't hit yourself in the face when it comes loose.

I hope you're strong, a TON of pull force is needed to remove it

So does it ruin the old one? Break off tabs inside or anything? It must be held on by more than just a press fit.

When you put the new one in (or the old one back in) you'll hear and feel it "click" into place, but pulling it off will not break anything. If you use something to pry like I did, grab it under the obvious metal part that wraps around the lower shaft.

That would be too easy, but it may be.

I couldn't find '98 instructions but this is for the '99.

i think there is a plastic base around the bottom of the boot which just releases for access to the knob, i haven't gone that far yet. In my old gti it removed similar, but there was a clip you had to cut off to release the knob, and buy a new clip to put a knob back on. just curioius of it was similar, that instruction set looks off for the 98.
