The GOOD: *Engine runs very smooth and strong, transmission shifts seamlessly *There are zero OBD codes showing, NONE. *Front Brakes are fairly new, (about 2,800 miles on them), red powdercoat calipers, ceramic pads, slotted/cross drilled rotors, which cost $350 for the set *Front tires are fairly new, about 2,800 miles on them as well *Headlights are brand new, shiny glass, not pitted
The BAD: *Rear brakes need replacement *Rear driveshaft was removed due to center bearing failure *Fuel lines were corroded out and leaking *A/C is weak * The coolant system needs diagnostic/repair work; I think the fan relay is hosed
Narrative:
All the body panels, except the hood, are good; hood has slight creasing at the back corners. All the lights, including fog lights, work. All switch gear works. Sunroof works. Leather interior is in decent shape, no rips at all. Radio works, and I have the security code for it. T-belt was done at 110,000 miles. This car sat in my garage after my son finished college. I did not drive it for four years. I had a V70R of my own and a 740 turbo wagon, so it just sat. Despite being in my garage, when I finally pulled it out, the fuel lines started leaking severely on top of the fuel tank. My local Volvo garage advised against attempting the repairs, since the entire rear subframe needs to be removed in order to then remove the fuel tank. Two local mechanics I also use declined to attempt the repairs. The reason:very high likelihood of breaking fasteners while attempting to remove them, the subsequent repair of which they advise is cost prohibitive considering the age of the car. So, I performed the repairs myself through the floor as prescribed on certain posts here on the advice forums, and have driven the car thus repaired for about two years now. The rear right caliper hung up a bit and now the wheel there is covered in rusty dust.
My 1990 740 turbo wagon is my project-car at present. I do not need the extra vehicle and I have no interest in repairing this car to a safe, roadworthy condition. However, it kills me to drive it to a scrap yard with the entire drivetrain still running so strong. The newish front brakes and the brand new headlight buckets must also be worth something to a fellow Volvo enthusiast. On the other hand, as stated, if there is no interest, off she goes to be scrapped, which is a sin considering how well she still runs.
