(OEM) Single Use hose clamp

Post by Mr. Detail »

Heh guys. Just went to the dealer and paid $4.90 each for one of these hose clamps. Whew!
(See attachment)
Just wondering how to even attach these things. I am afraid to ask but do I need a special "Volvo" tool?

Sorry for the fuzzy photo.

Oetker clamp. Yes you need a special tool. You could use regular screw on clamps instead..

The pliers in the link above is not exactly the correct tool because it doesn't crush down the crumpling part.

These clamps from Volvo are really heavy stuff hard to clamp and to undo. These need some quality heavy duty oeticker clamp pliers (also named CV joint clamp tool) with extra long handles or extensions.

I'd rather prefer aftermarket Oeticker clamps from other car makers which are just as safe but with thinner metal easier to clamp. You can get tons of these at the junkyard in various sizes (I have a nice collection). For those, this cheap chinese tool works just fine (forget using this tool on OEM Volvo clamps) https://www.ebay.com/itm/CV-Joint-Plier ... Swj3ZZkksd

You can also find clamps off Ebay from China but those are thin material and don't tighten that well.

To remove the old clamps, I usually use the tip of a cutting pliers to bend open the crushed area, which can also be reused again.

- Crushing down the crimp part is not crucial, it is a debatable point.

The Oetiker Pliers come in 2 formats: "Regular" (not crushing down the crimp part) and

- Anyway, this is the regular pliers:

- This is the tool that crushes down the crimp part:

You can use the regular tool and place a piece of metal or something in there to crush down the crimp part.

If you only do this once in 10 years, use pliers with blunt edges and squeeze both sides. It is not rocket science.

End cutters, also called end nippers, work fine for those clamps in most places. If you have poor access and you have to go from the side you can use diagonal cutters. You don't go overboard or you'll cut the clamp using the cutter pliers. Cheap ones like the low line at Harbor Freight work great as those will have less hard cutting edge but you aren't actually cutting for this purpose so spending $5.99 instead of $18 is fine. The feature that indents the side of the crimped area is for the clamps that are not pre-dented. If not pre-dnted that area will bend and the bend will relax and loosen the tension without the close and indent style doing that for you.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Now I have to see if I even have access under the car for that charcoal canister hose.

You can use wire cutter pliers - if you can go at it from both sides that is best. Just pinch them in, but don't cut them.

On some of these fittings I install the hose first if access is limited then position the part and secure - then do the other side. I do this when access to one side is easier than the other.
