P0442 Volvo XC90

Post by rakesh4404 »

Hi All,

Hope I am not bringing an old topic but I really couldn't find a any info for XC90.

Mine 2005 XC90 2.5L AWD - 200K miles still solid :)

Recently got check engine light and when I scanned got P0442(see attached)

I read a lot of post and it points to J hose replacement. If so can someone guide me with the part number for 2005 XC90 j hose and where I can locate it in my car?

Pls suggest any other checks which I need to perform.

Thanks in advance...

see here: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/16 ... 4-xc90-t6/

(use the embedded link within for actual parts diagram)

I would start with the easiest - gas cap. Make sure it is tight and the sealing ring is in good condition. From there I would tell you to try a smoke test if you can or if you want to go after the j-hose it is not that expensive plus it will let you look at all the other hoses in that area. One other item, when I did a J-hose on my XC70 I had spider webs and the like which may have been the problem as the hose was intact.

Check up this write up: viewtopic.php?t=43779 and then compare it to the embedded link referenced above as this will give you a pretty good idea of how it all works.

As above, my personal experience- https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... mall-leak)

May not be your issue but easy enough to validate and omit.

Thanks guys for the response, yes I did change the gas cap and it was not the cause.

So on a 2005 Volvo XC90, the J hose is it behind the passenger rear wheel(I am driving US Left hand drive Volvo)?

If you drop the spare and look in the cavity towards the front of the car, think you'll see it. Dredged this link up for reference-https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... gine-light

Someone else had a problem with the hose coupler that connects the front and rear long evap hoses. Guy with a buttload of posts on another Volvo site noted- "There is a joint in the evap hose from the gas tank up to the engine compartment. That joint is just behind the rear section of the front subframe on the passenger side of the car. There is a short (about 4"), rubber hose that connects the front and rear halves of the evap line together. I would make sure that joint is intact."

Could maybe check that as well.

Last but not least, it'll take time (drive cycles I believe) for the CEL to go away once fixed unless you are able to erase it in the car.

edit 082318- found verbiage for hose coupler, edited and re-posted.

It's been three weeks and I did a lot.
1. Replaced New Purge Valve.
2. Changed gas cap.
3. Checked J hose on the evap canister, no crack and j hose good.
4. Drove the car over 200miles to see if the light reset. Still no go.

If there is anything else please advise so that I can get it checked.

Thanks
