AC off by throttle question

Post by Uberbeans »

My A/C works great, but recently, on two occasions, after full throttle the a/c would not turn back on unless I turn the car off and back on, then works fine for a while. What component tells the A/C to turn off and on? Why would it start to fail? love this site. Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the AC clutch gap?

it seems good, and this only works after constant running for like 1.5 hours on a hot day. on the last occurrence if I cycled the a/c switch it would turn back on. The last time it did it it wasn't after full throttle application. It just happened. I checked the Freon level and pressure is good and on the high side. Could clutch gap cause that? I don't think the heat of the engine became higher than it was

Next time it cuts out. Look at the AC clutch and see if it is engaged. If it is not check for voltage to the AC clutch. That should tell you if it is something going on with the AC clutch or the control circuits.

Please give feedback on this topic on how problem was solved.

The driven plate for clutch has shims to set the gap between it and the drive part turned by belt. A bolt holds the plate onto compressor shaft and it may require a puller but usually on your car the plate will slip off if you pry gently with two screwdrivers. The shims (washers) can be up in the hub of the plate or can be stuck on end of shaft. The cap has a specification but as close as possible without dragging is just fine. The electric coil providing the magnetic force to pull the plate against driven pulley will get weaker with heat from engine and from heating o being energized. Once it cycles off after a period of use then the force may be too weak to engage it again. The increased gap requires more force. On your car the access is good if drp the splash pan below engine. On other models the subframe has to be dropped to get clearance and work space.
