Your car takes the skinny pollen filter, Volvo part 9454647 or an aftermarket equivalent
It’s a standard climate system.
The old filter was correct
Someone bent it a bit too aggressively Putting it in, but that doesn’t really affect function.

Blaargh, this is what's making me unsure what's going on... Rattnalle has a good point that the old filter WAS quite a tight fit so maybe it wasn't the right one.
Here here, lemme attack this whole problem from a different angle and maybe I can get some info that makes me sleep easy: completely ignoring the filter I took out and the location of the slots, how much does the car even care what type of cabin filter I get and which slot I put it in?
- Let's say I buy the normal thin filter and put it upside down and backwards in the thick slot just because. Besides rattling, will that cause any problems?
- Let's say I get the normal thick filter and it's too thick to fit either slot. If I cut away the plastic of the slots and mount the filter with tape and zipties before screwing the cover plate back on, will that matter? Is reprogramming the computer just a case of fan speed or does something else change too?
In other words, if I get a filter and it's the wrong one somehow, how much flexibility do I have in this system to mess things up/jury-rig a solution before something blows up.

The only bad thing that could happen in theory is if the new filter is too small and stuff gets past and clogs the fins of the evaporator. Small chance though.
The computer stuff is just to do with fan speed to get the same amount of air for a given setting.

What's interesting is that a relatively simple operation can be seen so many different ways.
a) Quality control on "paper product" assembly lines can differ such that dimensions can be "fudged". Fudged means willingly ignored or altered-the bases for much accounting practice.
b) Anyone of a number of inflexible/out-of-shape slobs could have been assigned to change your filter the last time. A resentful pig of an employee will often do a bad job just because he can get away with it.
c) If there's still a question remaining about one light or two being on the recirc button, we're experiencing a ongoing joke I believe is called trolling. What a troller gets out of it is beyond me.
d) The BASIC RULES of removing a filter element haven't been aired here yet. 1) Note which is the dirty side so you can match the air flow arrow on the filter to the actual air flow. 2) Also, odd shapes like our clipped corner need to be noted upon removal. Here's a great example of something a resentful pig slob of a "mechanic" would always miss.
e) Now, make us proud and do this. I'll happily help you if you're anywhere near Hackensack, NJ.
Hugs & kisses, ....you can do this. Kira

Two lights for the IAQ option - you can actually see this covered in the manual
Three lights for the troll moderator.
