Yesterday in Phinney Ridge...
I lived in Seattle for 8 years. It’s where I started this site.

I spent a few years in Seattle, too, beginning in the mid-1990's. When I visited Seattle recently, I realized that I was probably living there during the last of its glory days. My old neighborhood, Ballard, is almost unrecognizable.

Nice in summer weather, but moving to Denver eliminates that Seattle dampness:-)
Growth has been a factor in many cities since ending of WWII, but I suspect those days are ending or greatly reduced. I would expect to see more "vertical housing" in future years, with emphasis on living closer to or within city environments, where older neighborhoods are "renovated" with condos and apartment complexes.
Moving to Seattle from the suburban blight of a Sun Belt city, I was struck by the lack of homogeneity. It seemed like a real place. True, you only had to drive across a long bridge to arrive at bland-ville (Bellevue). Yes, Seattle still has a few interesting subsections remaining; but, the dramatic loss of much of its characteristic grittiness is very noticeable to those of us who experienced it.

Ballard is completely different now. Unrecognizable from my time there 1999-2007.
I was there in February, and I was shocked. South Lake Union also.
The difference is Ballard's now covered in 3-5 story buildings, but SLU is now covered in 50-story skyscrapers. I got lost not far from the REI flagship store, and I worked across the street from it for a year in 2006.
