Wondering if this might point to a 2012 battery that probably needs replacing anyhow...
Getting a weird "rumbly" start about 90% of the time now. Sounds like the car is choking out, but on the second crank, the car fires right up.
- Car is stage zero. (Abscate heard her the other day and was like, "wow, she sounds good!")
- Replaced fuel pump with FCP kit approx 4 years ago.
- Also replaced fuel pump relay with Volvo part at the same time.
- P0442 and P0133 every so often. (Not for the last 1000+ miles... guess the car healed itself or has given up!)
- recently replaced heater core, cleaned the temp sensor (in the car), installed new heater core lines, and took battery cables off and cleaned terminals (not that this stuff would really cause problems...)
- I do have a "leaky" gas tank (I cannot fill the tank to the end or else it drips out the top seal... I have parts but just haven't gotten around to it!)
Any suggestions? I was thinking about getting a new battery as preventative maintenance... I'll try to record a video.
As always, many thanks!!

My 95 had a very similar symptom (ok - not the codes) and it was *finally* cured by replacing the FPR. It was also hard starting when cold, didn't want to fire up. Took me 3 junkyard ECTs (I was sure ECT was the problem - it wasn't) and forever to get it cured. Check the vacuum line for smell of fuel after usage, that can ease ID if the FPR is gone far south.
Other things to check - are the Bougicord wires younger than 20 years? Air hose to the throttle body is intact and secure?

I think erikk is on the right track with FPR - if it is cranking well, leave the battery alone for now.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. I don't think I have an FPR... I know I shouldn't be asking NOOB questions, but where would that be if I had it?
Should I put in a new fuel pressure damper? (FCP says its discontinued...) (I knew I should've picked one up two years back, just in case.)

Look on your vacuum diagram - one of the hoses will run down to either the fuel rail or down near the PS rack under the car - thats the Fuel Pressure Regulator or FPR
You have to be a superior 1999- model to not have an FPR.

On your 98 the FPR is down near the PS rack on the passenger's side. PITA to work on, I've always done it from underneath. Last one I changed on a 98 I think I was forced to get a junkyard part. FP damper in the fuel rail - that's where the FPR is in my 95 thank goodness.

Part 9146761 is available from FCP, at a paltry $237. OEM Volvo, showing 1 business day shipping.
A sniff of ether might tell you if the fuel mix is messed up and if you are on the right track of fuel troubleshooting
The definitive test would be fuel pressure check at rail

In my 95 the fuel pressure was fine when operating but would drop within a couple hours.

Probably this will work, still pricey ... http://www.bosch-motorsport.de/content/ ... tml#teaser
but I wonder if Bosch has other ~3 Bar FPRs still in production
