1988 740 Turbo Sedan- Charlotte, NC

Post by bmdubya1198 »

Time to part ways with this my Volvo 740. The B230FT runs well, just changed the oil. I just replaced the transmission as well, and it seems to shift nicely. M46 4 speed manual w/ overdrive. LOTS of parts have been replaced recently including...

Spark plugs & wires
Fuel pumps (both in-tank and under-car)
Fuel filter
Fuel tank pump/sender seal
Fuel injectors (used)
Timing belt & tensioner
Front crank seal
Front and rear cam seals
Intermediate shaft seal
Rear main seal
Clutch pilot bearing
Cam position/hall sensor
Clutch pedal pad
Alternator mount bushings

The main problem is that it needs a new steering rack for sure, it has a lot of play and is leaking. There may be more that needs to be done with the front end, but the only thing I can say for sure is bad is the rack. It's driveable, but it takes some effort to keep the car straight due to the bad rack. I probably wouldn't recommend driving it home, but it could probably be done if you're crazy enough.
There seems to be a leak from the transmission bell housing gasket, which is quite annoying because I just replaced it. It also needs windshield wipers and could probably use tires soon (it was sitting on them for a while, but the previous owner seemed to have kept air in them at least). Still plenty of tread, but they are old. Crack across the center of the windshield.
The overdrive button is not plugged in currently, but I have the wire pigtail that can be soldered or crimped on. Easy fix. I do not know if the overdrive works, but I see no reason why it shouldn't. I don't know if the power antenna works, but the previous owner gave me a spare, so I assume it doesn't. I will include the spare.
No headliner currently as it was all ripped up. The clear coat is pretty badly peeled on the hood and roof, but the rest of the paint is okay.

I hate to let it go, but I can't justify spending more money on this car. I have another Volvo that needs my attention, and I'm already too far into this one. My loss is your gain!
It's a great project that just needs someone who can finish it up. She's far from perfect, but the engine is solid and the chassis is rust free, so it's a great starting point.

These cars are getting harder to find, especially the Turbo. Get one while they're cheap!

188k miles, clean title in my name ready to be signed over.

Asking $1,800. Feel free to PM me with any questions or offers. Located in Indian Trail, NC near Charlotte.

Still available?

Any other issues?

Do you think the rear main seal is leaking?

Sale is pending currently, but anything could change. The only things I can think of off the top of my head that I don't think I listed above are the valves could probably use adjustment and the A/C belt is currently removed, but I think that's because there was a hose leaking. Compressor is not seized up or anything, it still spins freely.

I replaced the rear main seal, and it is not leaking. The leak from the transmission is transmission fluid. I believe it's a bell housing seal.

 I traded it for the Miata, so the new owner will appreciate the free wash! I think he actually plans on painting it black, which hurts a little. I love a beige Volvo.
