I love buying VWs for cheap and feeling like Im driving an AUDI!!
Seen from that end of the scale it's an upside :-)

That is like buying a Karmann ghia because one cannot afford a Porsche. Which is exactly what I did when I was 16.

VAG had a good thing going in the MK4 era ~'99-'05 models. But the newer ones have gotten too Ford-like (cheap/plasticy/breaky) look and feel. That's what I think of the newer BMWs too. Some automakers don't seem to balance the financial pressures brought about by globalized design-production with regard to overall product quality quite as well as others. Volvo-Geely seems to be doing a much better job than average in this respect. Their newest models are as solidly built and genuinely nicer than their models from 15+ years ago. That scenario is getting sort of rare with regard to US & European car brands when you think about it. Generally it's some of the Asian makes that are bucking that trend.
Toyota/Lexus, Hyundai/Genesis, and Subaru all make some perfectly suitable 'Volvo alternatives'. That you'll probably be much happier with overall than a current VAG car.

My KG was a 72 convertible with that awful 34-pict30 carb, made even worse by my 009 distributor.

Many “firsts” in that car....

Case in point. This is from a 400+ hp S7 from 2000-something. Wouldn't look out of place in a base model Polo that probably cost a tenth new. That really doesn't work for me.
