rear bumper and chassis repair

Several problems with my rear bumper illustrated in the photos. 1998 V70 T5.

1. the brackets and long bolts on driver and passenger sides that mount to the bumper and in turn are bolted to the chassis are all corroded and unusable.
1. the metal portion of the bumper itself that accepts the brackets in 1 is corroded and unusable.
3. the driver side upper plastic mounting arm is cracked and bent out of position to the point it does not mate with the guide. The driver side wheel arch liner that rivets to the bumper is cracked,
4. the passenger side chassis mount is missing the connection tab farthest from the midline due to corrosion.

Is repair possible (it always is given unlimited resources) and if so how?

1. Repair of 1 is straightforward, more or less, after purchase of brackets and long bolts (dealer in stock for ~$85 total both brackets and bolts).

2. Are parts available to repair 2? Salvage yard? I think I can separate the metal and plastic portions of bumper (T20 Torx loosened on one side and other side is plastic retaining tabs). Replace metal only or entire bumper?

3. Don't know how I'll deal with this but these must be ways if all other issues are resolved. Replacement parts?

4. To me 4 is the big question. As is there will be only one connection bolting bracket to chassis on the passenger side. I can imagine attaching an L bracket in some way to bridge bracket to chassis but this is not optimal.

Junkyard is your friend here, but seeing the amount of corrosion you may find the parts in your area are as bad as you already have.

You may have to go out of your area to buy the metal parts you need.

Replacing the bumper mounting brackets with new and the long bolts is the way to go as again, unless you live in a dry state like California or Texas you may find the parts are rusted badly.

The bumper stiffener panel you will need to replace. Anything is repairable, but the cost of aluminum welding is probably more than finding a good stiffener. If your plastic painted section is good, you should be able to remove the plastic section from the metal part using a Torx driver.

Repairing the plastic parts is do-able if you have access to a plastic welder, but most don't. Again used pats at a junkyard is the way to go.

OOPS! Forgot about the rusted chassis mounts for the bumper. The LH one may be ok with a good wire brushing and paint, but of course the RH is toast. Maybe if you know a welder, you can cut the relevant part off a scrap car and have it welded in place. Ask the welder what he needs before you remove it.

Yikes. That Aluminum corrosion is really bad. I just did that job on the 1999 this summer

Junkyard parts definitely. Prwood has a line on good Volvo junkyards in Stoughton maybe? I’ll search

Bumper back on with zip ties and simple push fasteners. Neither long term. Also need new or repaired plastic support guide that attaches to the body panel on the right.

Question- some sites say right and left metal brackets for bumper to chassis supports are different, some say they are the same. Which is true for 1998 V70 T5 wagon?

I though they were different but I ordered two of the same part to do my 1999...I also put bad information on the internet on this in that thread..bad bad bad

Thanks to Jim's guidance below, I researched this a bit.

Definitive answer - the bumper brackets on the car are asymmetric, with the left bolt higher than than the right bolt, so that the brackets fit on either side - ergo one part number. (You can't invert the bracket as the nut is welded in, of course)

It looks like this happened post 1993.

The bolt on bumper brackets for the 93 850 sedan are different for each side. I think all later p80's are the same for both sides.

My car was rear-ended last month and the repair estimate had all the part #s.
