rear motormount: how do I get it out?

Post by Clemens »

after failing to remove the front aka. left side hydraulic motor mount last year this time inwas smarter and removed the radiator shroud first. easy. now, the rear or right (the one close to the firewall) won't come out because there is no way i can lift it high enough. i followed ben's fcp video and put the bolts for the radaitor facing motor mount in. the front one under the crank and the torque mounts are loose. it seriously feels like i'm hitting something on my way up. i jacked under the tranny as per ben's advice.
do i have to unbolt the upper torque mount (the one by the firewall)?

Are you talking about one near firewall...rear hydraulic mount?
I read somewhere...maybe here on MVS that subframe needs to be lowered a bit.

yeah, that hydraulic one under the turbo by the firewall. ben @ fcp did it w/o lowering the subframe.

I just saw the video....did you lift the gearbox side of the engine high enough?

I've done this on two P80s:
- Jack both the oil pan (with a piece of wood underneath) and the transmission (with a piece of wood underneath.
- Disconnect side engine mount, lower torque mount, and upper torque mount while you jack away
- Keep things level (i.e., this jack, then that jack...) go slow, take your time.
- Use a long prybar and pop it out.

Also Volvo says not to over lift the engine/trans as you can damage the LH axle as it can get over extended. Vida says max is 30mm. Any more will damage the inner CV joint.

One last think is to check when you go to fit the new motor mount, if it is like a V70 version, it has a metal locating tab on it. Make sure you get this aligned correctly or it will not go in.

The other guys have said it all in terms of what to undo.

Good Luck!

Neil.

thanks for the advice. unbolting the upper torque mount or the second jack did the job. the only thing where i had to go my own way was getti g the new mount in. there was no way i could get it in because the upper threaded rod was way too long. i put the nut on, used a rotary tool to cut off 3-5mm, filed the edges down, removed the nut snd had a motor mount i could actully get in.
one word of advice: do not remove too much of the thread, otherwise you can't put the nut back on.

also: that 30mm lift limit is a joke. no way to get that thing out, the threaded rod on top of the mount is longer than that
