Hi volvo folks
I'm a greenhorn with Volvo, I'm hard core mid 80s Mercedes W123
I inherited a beautiful 2000 V70 XC from my little brother last year. Beautiful thing and a nicer daily driver.
I need put a used engine in it .... can anyone name which engines will work, its a VIN 56, B5244T Will any others drop in with little or no conflics.
Thanks in advance.

You will have to match the Variable Valve timing configuration for your motor on the replacement - I believe it is Exhaust Only CVVT
If you lift the valve cover it will have either one or two solenoids behind the timing cover.
Your computer will need to see the same signals as the original engine or it will fault.
ECM swaps on Volvo post 1999 require cloning as they are married to car VIN.

The only ones that will drop in straight up is a '99 or a '00. Those engines are actually a bit different in that the '00 has solid lifters but they are functional equivalents and the ECU doesn't know or care. Beyond '00 there were some fairly significant changes.
What happened that requires a whole engine swap? The normal failures like a blown head gasket or a broken timing belt can usually be dealt with by just repairing or replacing the head which typically more available than the entire engine.
I bought one that I thought just and a blown head gasket but the PO kept driving it after the head gasket blew and ran it out of water which destroyed three of the cylinders. It took me nearly a year to scare up a replacement engine but I lucked into one that was local.

As you are in the San Francisco area, up the road in Sacramento area there is a specialist Volvo and Saab breakers called vandsautodismantlers. I have't used them as living in Canada the shipping is high, but when I did speak to them they seemed knowledgeable and helpful. Prices also at the time seemed fair. I would hope they also give some form of guarantee and will identify the correct motor for your need.

The 2001 motor with the Bosch crank and cam sensors is a better match for a 2000 model and is a B5244T3 with one CVVT on exhaust.
Also the 2002 motor goes straight in and has only one CVVT on exhaust once you remove and swap all the Denso engine management gear such as cam and crank sensors.
Volvo changed the 5 cylinder engine for the 2003 MY with intake AND exhaust CVVT.
If the 1999 motor B5254T is all you can find it will also slide in with little modification. There are plenty more 2001 and 2002 cars out there for parts as Volvo sales in 1999 were dwindling.

Good point Lee. It lost coolant, I had my attention on legal matters, and my own health concerns after two traumatic brother deaths boom boom quick. Knocked me off my feet.Ozark Lee wrote: ↑28 Sep 2018, 16:49 The only ones that will drop in straight up is a '99 or a '00. So far, $150 to tow it home. Pulling the head off is free, it I'm lucky the head is not toast from overheat.
I've been scouring for a good repair manual. Haynes is sketchy, they cover way too many models for one resource, black ink on darkish paper, insufficeint contrast and resolution in illustrations. Getting old is part of the picture.
Can you, anyone recommend a great repair manual. I notice one online free manual souce omits 2000 VIN 56.
Volvo seems to have many many different engine and chassis combinations, variations on the same engine.
Volvo seems to want to withold or make prohibitively expensive the repair information. Is this impression incorrect? I've seen exactly nothing on CVVT.
Thanks again for your feedback. The used engine marketplace is mudhole if ever there was one.
You took time and did well. Because they are pricey to repair people sometimes let them sit, then let them go for nothing out of frustration I guess.

Did you mean 2001 B5234T3
Its freagin "A" confusing Volvo has so many different ones.
there is a 2001 V70 vin 53 locally 153K mi. B5234T3 for reasonable money.
it usess Bosch ME7 engine management like mine
These many many volvo engines are a huge challenge to account for . The Volvo modular engine -wikipedia seems helpful, IF it is accurate.
I need access to schematics for all these Volvo Modular engines.

For service literature the chassis stuff in the Haynes is fairly accurate even though it is really for an 850 but for anything accurate you really need VIDA which is a computer program. The problem is that it wants to run on an old browser. There are some links in the VIDA/DICE forum to a virtual machine copy of the program that will run on newer platforms if the links are still good. The schematic stuff isn't there on VIDA but there are schematics floating around, a little query on The Google will get you to them. The ones I've found on the web are scanned copies and the sets typically have missing pages and bad pagination but if you download enough of the variants for the '99 and the 2000 you come up with a set that is fairly complete.
As far as the ECU internal stuff goes, I know of no schematic for what is inside of the box and even then it is a processor, some I/O chips, and software and there certainly isn't any source code for it. You can change the mapping but the core code is what it is. Schematically the ECU is just a black box with inputs and outputs.
There are fairly cheap Chinese knockoff DICE interfaces that when used with VIDA will tell you tons of stuff and in many cases that is the only way to query many of the functions on the car such as the throttle module.
If it overheated I would start by yanking the head and having a look to see what you are dealing with.

It's just a plastic cover closest to cylinder 1 Abscate was referring to not a valve cover in the traditional sense.
The B5234 motor from T5 variants has lower compression and is therefore better suited to high boost/bigger turbo. It has smaller bore and lower compression pistons.
Any motor from a 2.4T or XC variant 2001-2002 is OK.
