Interference motor damage 1996 960 sedan

Post by Jason Pieczarka »

I recently had a friend replace an damaged exhaust valve. Unfortantley he did not properly inspect the timing belt system, the new belt fell of at idle. We removed the head to inspect the damage, many bent valves and small dents on the top of the pistons. I know I should replace all the valves but Iam not sure if I need to replace the pistons. The engine has 160,000 and the cylinders are in great shape. Any advice would be very helpfull. Thank you.

Small dents in the pistons should not cause any harm.

I agree with waynej.

Some years ago this happened with one of our fleet vehicles. The T-belt snapped at idle. Minor damage to the piston crowns. They were left in and the vehicle covered another 90,000 miles without any problems before we sold it.

Thank you for the reply. I plan to replace all the valves and re-assemble the engine. Is there anything else I should consider checking? Thank you for you help.
