2000 Volvo V70R AWD Turns Over Won't Run

Post by GregoryV70RAWD »

Hey everyone,

I’m hoping someone has run across this before or has some good thoughts on what it could be.

Here’s the background leading up to the problem.
The performance of my car started to deteriorate in the summer and would periodically go into limp mode. It also started to turn over without starting randomly. I noticed that when it would turn over and run, the ETS light would turn on for a few seconds then turn off when I first turned on the ignition. When it would not turn over and run, the ETS would not turn on at all when the ignition was switched on. For awhile when the ETS light wouldn’t come on right away I would wait up to five minutes the light would come on and it would start. Now, the ETS light only comes on so I can start the car after I disconnect and reconnect the battery. To drive the car everyday, I have a remote that I disconnect and reconnect the battery with so I don’t have to pop the hood every time I need to start the car. After the repairs below the car runs awesome every time, but only after I disconnect and reconnect the battery.

Here’s what I’ve checked and replaced.
I had XeMODeX transfer programming to one of their remans for the ETM and the ECU, new fuel relay, and the immobilizer light does not indicate any problems. There are a few other things that I can’t remember because I’ve been dealing with this for over a year and a half now.

Any help y’all can offer us very much appreciated.

It's got to be back to basics on this one.

One of the necessary components to running an engine is missing when you need to disconnect/reconnect the battery cables.

Either the ETM is not opening to the correct angle for starting (around 16-20 degrees of throttle flap angle) effectively either starving the engine of air, or it's opening too wide making it too lean. I would bet it's not opening at all at times. These P80s will not start with a faulty ETM or bad wiring to ETM causing it to starve of air.

When the key is placed on PosII can you get someone to listen for the ETM click on then make the next "click" about 8 secs later. Try this repeatedly 15-20 times with someone at the key while you listen.

The Engine management relay (blue) is a prime suspect here. In the engine bay you may also have a white relay which can be wired for the ETM and secondary air pump if fitted.

Great thoughts precopster. I am in the middle of a tile project in the house right now too, I'm apparently trying to overwhelm myself with DIY projects lately, but hopefully I can get someone to help me with the key while I listen.

Thanks for your input, I'll let you know what I find out.

Got a sound recorder on your phone? Set it to record and lay the phone next to the ETM and work the key.

Gregory...welcome to the small elite club of the “ bastards” ... the 1999 and 2000 models

We are special.

Somewhere in this forum I documented the “ startup sequence “ of exact;y what happens and when withBosch ME7 engine mananagment , perhaps you can compare your ETS light behaviors with that video

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=81535&hilit=ME7+sta ... e&start=10

If you are disconnecting the battery each time you run, you are always resetting the ECU map as well as all the emissions monitors - not a running problem but will Be trouble if you have annual car inspections like us.

Definitely confirm the whine-8mseconds click Mike refers to above

That’s a good idea Rick. I’ll have to try that.

Thanks Abscate,

I’ll check that out. It’s definitely a love/hate relationship with the car. I am due for inspection this month so I gotta get it fixed. I can’t ever get any codes either since it won’t start without the battery disconnect/reconnect.

Gregory
