1996 960 Brake Shift Lockout

Post by correllkp »

Hello all. Often times, especially when the cabin is hot, the shifter will not shift out of park. At first I though it was the brake shift lockout switch. However, when this happens I can use the override button to put the car in drive but the car does not have any dashboard power (no lights), headlights don't work, turn signals don't work, and power windows don't work. If I use the override switch to put into gear and drive around for a while the power to the above does come on. I am thinking this is not the brake shift lockout switch...any ideas what it could be?

Ignition interlock? There's a cable that connects to the shifter.

Found the problem from one of Robert’s videos...interlock switch on the steering column has a weak spring. When key is turned to turn car on it doesn’t return all the way back to where it should be...just have to move the key back a hair and all works fine. The part is about $50 and from the video shouldn’t be long to replace...20 min or so.
