Ran an errand on the way top work this morning, car wouldn't start when I came out of the store. Pulled the original fuel pump relay, put in a spare from the junkyard I keep in the glove box, back on the road in 15 minutes. Time to rotate a new spare into the glove box.

Investigated some new tire rubbing noises from the rear end... Looks like the upper spring perch (rear) has rusted in halfsies. Guess I'll get to googlin !

I went no NJ State inspection and my 98 V70 passed so I am happy

Happened to me once on the driveway. A spare relay in the car is definitely a must!

At the very least, keep a jumper wire in the glove box. Those relays will get ya when you least expect it. And make sure your spare is a Volvo relay. I've had KAE fail within 400 miles.

Same! The one that went out that day was a KAE I got at the junkyard in new-looking condition. I put it in there to try and diagnose a hesitation that the car has had since I bought it. It probably lasted just as long as yours.

Just a quick question about bird droppings (I'm serious). Just this morning, I noticed some bird droppings on the fender on my S70. Carefully, with some water and a microfiber towel, I removed the droppings. But then I noticed that the clear coat is somewhat foggy, let's say, damaged. This happended before on the bonnet and with a lot of effort I got the paint back to how it was. Is this a thing with Volvo paints? Back in the day, when I was a mechanic, I knew that on new cars the paint isn't completely hard and dry yet.... but on a 20 year old car? You guys have any tips for me? (except buying a car cover

)

Sounds like my experience, but my clear coat is pretty well shot. I try to avoid parking under light poles, trees, power lines. Volvo paint doesn't seem to like bird droppings, but it seems unfazed by pine tar.

We have a lot of pines here..

Lukewarm water and no rubbing on bird droppings. They help scratch the paint if rubbed. And you need to be pretty quick about it too. Less so on metallic paints they seem hardier. But they won't really go away unless washed properly with schampoo much like the film of general road dust that ends up on the car.

Seal the paint to make it easier. Products like HydrO2 are really good for the very small effort involved if you don't feel like doing the full thing with a polish and proper sealant.

Yeah, most paint will do that. Definitely don't rub it at all, try to remove it quickly.
Typically a quick detailer works pretty well to remove the stains left behind. Just try to clean it up quickly to avoid any kind of etching.
