Four climate control error codes...Help!

Post by JoeyG85Z »

So, I bought my 1994 850 Turbo wagon for $600 and it's got problems, the most pressing being the lack of any climate control functionality. I read out the codes from the doohickey under the door and got four:

1-2-2: outside temperature sensor open circuit or shorted to 12v

1-3-5: No signal from engine coolant temperature sensor

2-2-1: Passenger side damper motor position sensor open circuit or shorted to 12v

3-2-2: Passenger side damper motor active too long

For the hell of it I pulled out the blower motor and it was dragging on the bearing, but it ran with direct 12 volts. I know the ECT is working because I can get readings from with a live data setting on a scan tool. There was the remains of some kind of animal nest inside the box with the evaporator which I cleared out. Both the blend actuator seems to work somewhat, as I am able to get some heat via flow-through and I can turn it up and down. Any ideas where I can go next?

I'm really surprised that you didn't pull a 1-5-1 or a 1-5-2. Since the blower does work when hooked up to battery it points to a bad power stage (blower resistor) and that typically posts a code.

The ECC is like an elephant and it never forgets any code unless you clear them. I would clear the codes and see what comes back. To the most pressing problem I would suggest lubricating the fan bearings well. When I lube them I run the fan both backwards and forward to get the oil worked in. Changing direction is accomplished by changing the polarity from the battery.

The next step is to replace the power stage. If you can find one in a junk yard for cheap it is worth a try to go that route but push comes to shove you will need to bite the bullet and buy a new one. I think the last one I bought was in the neighborhood of $150.00 for a new one. Don't install the new power stage until you get the blower running smoothly. It is excessive current draw from dragging blower bearings that kills the power stage.
