2001 awd xc v70 ,constant humming noise

Post by bobsnow100 »

My wife owns a 2001 awd xc v70 wagon with 130,000 miles.
About 2 months ago when the car is driven it makes a humming noise ,like if you had snow tires on it.The noise appears to be coming from the right rear. If you go faster the noise gets louder . When you're on the highway driving straight ,it is pretty loud, weird thing is that if the road bends right and you turn the steering a little to the right ,the noise stops until the wheel is straightened again and the humm is back.
Anybody have any ideas what this could be. All the tires seem to be wearing evenly.

Sounds to me like a hub assembly a.k.a. wheel bearing. I've done them on frt wheel drive but it should be relatively similar on allwheel drive. I believe the rear brakes are slightly different, if you were planning to do this your self.

Thanks Ragman
I was thinking it might be some type of bearing noise.

Follow up
Yes,it was the right rear hub bearing. Car is quiet again.
It took about 1 1/2 hours to do the job. Not too difficult. I did have one setback. One of the emergency brake pads was seperated from the metal and I had to get new ones .Pep Boys, Advanced auto parts stores don't have them or even list them, so I ended up having to get them at the Volvo dealer. $58,not too bad a price
I searched online for the best price for the hub bearing and ended up buying them from
partsgeek.com , $178.
