06 XC70 brake lifespan?

Being an XC70 it is AWD. Brakes are different, but as I have not worked on FWD or AWD P2 models not sure what is involved. According to Vida to release the parking brakes involves removing the center console completely to access the mechanism. Can't believe it is that much harder than either a FWD or AWD P80. Only reason to remove the center console when working on the brakes is to replace the parking brake cables. Otherwise adjustments are done by removing a small access panel.

Is that access panel within the storage compartment of the center console?

Reason asking is my right parking shoe is squeaking. Sound only happens after the parking brake has been utilized. I took off both rear discs and noticed the expander on the rear side isn't coming out far enough for the top shoe to get fully seated in the groove. There was some dust within the disc coming off the shoes I replaced last May. To fix this I'll try to give the right cable some slack where to two cables meet at the lever. May also need to tighten the left cable.

The access on a P2 XC70 for cable adjustment in in the center console. It is (if I recall) on the RHS of the parking brake lever.

We have the same issue that we get a groan from the LHR parking brake when used if you get into and out of the vehicle.

I was going to investigate when replacing the rear rotors, but due to time constraints and the rear rotors were well able to take another set of pads, I didn't disassemble the brakes fully to check it out. I have asked the dealer in the past to remedy but they never did.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the reply but there is no access panel on my 2007 XC70. Using a flashlight I can see the connecting cable lever is far behind in the rear section of the console. The entire console needs to be removed to access the lever.

I'm nearly done removing the console but only thing holding me back is that harness connector for the rear 12V connection. I'm using a mirror with an LED but cannot see a tab to release that harness connector? I'll report back with a picture when I do get this solved.

The adjustment nut for P2s is beneath the levers leather boot.

After spending over an hour removing the console I found our cable lever isn't adjustable.



Like most vehicles it's fixed. I've only seen a handful that have an adjuster at the divider.

As you can see it is slanted far to the left due the handle being on the left side of the console. Because of that fixture the right parking cable will always get pulled further by the handle.

After loosening the adjuster nut I was able to get the top shoe fully seated into the groove of the expander on the right parking brake. I then slowly widened the shoe adjuster until I could feel the shoes touching the inner disc. I then shortened that adjuster 3/4 of a turn then checked the shoes are not touching the inner disc. Final step is slowly tightening the handle adjuster nut.

Raising her up, removing the wheels, calipers, discs, and adjusting the shoes & cable took less time than removing that center console for the first time. The rear connectors for the 12V and AUX are a PITA to remove.
