Salvaging a key

Post by Confusedman »

Sorry if I did this wrong, I’ve searched through this forum but never posted. A few months ago I lost my key to my 1999 Volvo V70. I called the dealer and they said itd run like $450 to get a new key and I’d still have to tow it there. I only paid $300 for the car so I wasn’t keen on doing this. Can I just take the key, ignition, immobilizer, and door handle from another Volvo and switch it out? If so, what years can I use? I know that the rfid chip started in 1999 but how far up can I go? Thanks

You don't have any keys at all? You would need to add a new key to to the approved list. Some models will let you add a key if there is an empty space. Other then that, any new keys need to be added by a Volvo dealer. There is software required to program in the new key ... a Volvo dealer is the only one that can get the software.

I know all that. I’m asking if you can just take a key from another Volvo and switch out all the hardware, including the computer to take care of the software.

Try maybe posting in the 1998-2000 section. I don't think that is feasible, I would guess the key 'code' must be recognized by the car's computers.

From the little I learned about the 1999-2000 models while I owned one the ECM engine computer also has key info and instrument cluster has transponder matching codes from the key (immobilizer receives signal from cluster once key is approved)

Also if you swap ECM you might run into a TCM (transmission computer) and ETM (throttle) incompatability.

Keys are easy to add to a P2 via our gurus here. Is this a turbo?? because if not you have a Denso ECM which our gurus have not written software for apart from ETM cloning.

From what I gather, on the 1999 & 2000 S70 the immobilizer needs to be programed with the key codes and a VIN number that matches the one stored in the CEM.

I was at a Ace Hardware the other day, noticed a sign that said Ace can program most keys, might be worth checking out.

Key programing for $140. There are other key programing services on line they all need the immobilizer and the VIN number shipped to them. I think the physical cutting can be looked up in a database but don't quote me on that.

Do you think I could just take all the computer and key stuff from a 2001 parts v70?

P2 is a totally different platform. Key data is processed differently.

That listing is referring to the C70 P80 platform which went to 2004 (same as yours)

It doesn't mean the immo module on a 2001 V70 or S60 (P2) has anything to do with keys
