2001 s60 p1620 and p0507

Post by mtrdrms »

Ok guys, I got some issues.
So I picked up an s60 last week because I'm a sucker for a $400 car. It was in total limp mode - it will start and idle but almost no throttle response. It had codes p1620 and p0507. I figured it needed a new etm and I've got lots of parts laying around so I replaced it. Nothing changed. It starts easily but runs a little rough. Very little throttle response.

Couple questions:
Do I need to reset anything to get the new etm to work?
What else could the problem be?
If I've got a bad IAC, can I clean it or do I need a new one?
What do I check next?

Thanks!
Andy

Have you cleared the codes and see if they come back?

--------------------------------------------------------------

ECM-620A (P0507) Idling speed. Too little response

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information

D2302282 Condition
Engine control module (ECM) monitors the actual idle rpm (actual value). This fault code is a subsequent fault code due to another problem in the engine resulting in the idle rpm deviating outside the tolerance range.
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects that:

If the idle condition is fulfilled and idle has deviated from the tolerance (normal idle -100 to +200 rpm), diagnostic trouble code ECM-620A is generated in the engine control module (ECM).

The control module's test for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) starts in the event of:

Engine running.

Note! The control module can only detect the fault once the test has been started and the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored when the conditions are met.

Substitute value
None.

Possible source
  • Idle speed too high:
Air leakage in the intake system.
Throttle is sticking or is blocked (e.g. oil film, dust, icing).
Blocked crankcase ventilation or positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) nipple.
    Clogged or dirty oil sump.
Idle speed too low:
  • Blocked intake system.
    Blocked exhaust system

Blocked crankcase ventilation or positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) nipple.

You can spend time reading about ETM issues in its forum.

In short, the chance of a replacement ETM working in car without updating software is about 1/5.

There are many $250 Volvos in the 1999-2001 MY out there because if this

Ah, ok. That makes sense. I hadn't come across that in my search on this problem but my Google-fu is not strong. So, is that a dealer service? Or is there a hack?

Although helpful suggestions, none of those conditions are present on my car. Do you know if I need to do anything else to get a used throttle body to work in my car? Or is that not my problem?

An ETM requires matched software to the ECU or it will go into limp mode.

Xmodex can do this for you, I believe FCP IS NOW the sales portal, about $500

We have a Volvo software genius here from Belarus, user doublebug, who can do this software match over Internet , you need a DICE BOX $100, and it's a $150 service, assumes your ETM IS IN GOOD SHAPE ( they last about 150k miles with variation of +-30k miles)

You can keep buying about 5 junkyard ETMs at $20-30 until you get on that works and has right software, plan on 5

On a 2001 your ECU is VIN coded to your car so don't replace that in trying to get a match, that won't work.

Ok, thanks. Thats great information. I may try reaching out to doublebug. I'm amazed by people that can do that kind of work because its such a mystery to me.

So, I discovered in my search that there are several different part numbers for the throttle bodies of that vintage. For instance, mine is 8644345. The one I replaced it with is 8644344. This obviously didnt work. Do you think I have a better chance at plug and play with a 8644345? I see there are several for sale on eBay or does the 20% rule still apply?

You have to match both the part number and the software in it, which there is no way to read.

All the eBay guys do is take them from junkyards and mark them up - which you can do yourself, without markup.

If its an NA you can unbolt the ETM in a few seconds.
