2004 XC70 PCV Replacement Tutorial

Post by 850Squared »

Hey everyone, I know the overall subject has been covered ad nauseam, but all of the tutorials I find are for the older 850's etc. Does anyone have one for a 2004 XC70? There seems to be a lot of changes made since those tutorials were done. Thanks for your help!

I believe your 2004 and my 1999 are very similar in PCV - heated PCV pipe by engine coolant.

I wrote up the job for my 1999 -will try to find link.

The coolant hose of the PCV system is very expensive, but you can rebuild it: you can use generic heater hose, just cut the factory Oetiker clamps, and install new hose/clamps.

Check your PCV banjo bolt and make sure it is the latest version. If in doubt order a new one. There was a recent discussion, rather interesting, on a member's Volvo engine that was destroyed by a failed PCV banjo bolt. The bolt's innards got inhaled into the pistons and caused considerable piston and head damage.

See here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=86687

It appears Volvo went through 3-4 upgrades on the PCV banjo bolt due to problems. So - just saying - as the bolt has to come off - you may want to inspect it to make sure it is the latest design or just order it when you place your part order. You maybe able to get a mirror there to look for the numbering.

This is the latest version: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... vo-8653884

(not completely confirmed but bolts with the numbers "2014" on the bolt head, as shown in the picture are the latest versions)

SuperHerman, thanks for the post. This is great info and I had no idea these banjo-bolts were such an issue. I did end up having the PCV's replaced at my a local shop - great guys. I bought the kits from FCP and just looked and they don't include new banjo's in the kit. Great. Not sure if my guys replaced those, but I will have to go look at the paperwork. I have two 2004 XC70's that they did as both were blocked up - bought them used for the kids and the PCV was done immediately on both.
Is it possible to replace those banjo-bolts without ripping everything apart? I also have my 2006 S60R....the PCV is fine on that as it's always gotten full synthetic, but will try the mirror trick to see if I can see the markings.

Thanks again!

A couple I have saved...

FCP - too many air tools, but it's good (and a 2004)...

My only advice - do NOT use a crow's foot on that left / forward intake bolt. Depending on how tight, you will round it, and then you can't get any tool onto it. Use a wobble socket.

The banjo bolt under the intake is a genuine pain in the ass. Patience, perseverance, and get it started before you put the intake manifold on - it's too close to the alternator and at a weird angle.

I have done many PCV on the 1998 S70 series, it is almost the same except the P80 had only vent hoses and NO coolant hoses.

I am not convinced the coolant hoses add anything to decrease the gunk build-up as the 1998 S70 (basically Volvo 850) PCV easily lasts 100K+ w/o the coolant hoses.

For the 2004-2007 S60, V70 series, I guess you can buy the bolts and close off where the banjo bolts locations and connect only the vent hoses. Has anyone done this mod (closing off coolant hose banjo ports to save money)?
