Didn't even know those grates existed. Do they just reduced splashing?

I assume it is to prevent debris from falling in the engine? I would rather it was not there so I could see inside the engine better. Hopefully one of you Volvo technicians out there can shed a light on this? June

Abscate, you know my theory; if flooring the accelerator was harmful, it would stop higher than the floor! Remember Volvo's commercial "drive it like you hate it"?

Obviously in a T6 WOT is not needed or desirable unless the car is traveling about 30 mph otherwise wheel spin occurs. Yes I drive my car with vigor! And enjoy every minute of acceleration! I love that feeling of power!!! The biggest problem in the city is all the slow appliances blocking my path... Secretly I always wanted to try out a actual race car on a track  . June

My 02 motor has the grates, my 99 motor does not.

Get out there on a track! SCCA has a traveling event called Track Night in America, which is a relatively cheap and easy way to get some track time. Local Porsche Club of America chapters have Driver's Ed events which are a better way to get good - better managed events, more track time, an instructor for the whole weekend - but it's more of a time and money commitment. Once you get started, though, you'll be hooked. Track days are literally the #1 most fun thing I do in my life.

Can you drive a car like one of these photos? I have ridden in a factory equipped 426 hemi Plymouth Road Runner in yellow back in the 80's. He wouldn't let me drive it though... the slam you in the seat feeling was a real rush! Too many years seeing Nascar on the tv. I suspect those cars are hard to drive. June

My initial thought on those louvers where that they were put there to help reduce the seepage of oil past the cap that causes people to complain about finding pools of oil on the top of the engine near the ignition coils. Like I discovered yesterday when I changed my oil. Ugh. I hate that.

But as you say June, they would also prevent object from falling into the engine.

Btw. when I was out doing errands today I thought "you know what? I'm going to ask June to post pictures of the louvers under the oil cap to see just how much of the backed on crud really is being cleaned up."
So thanks for doing that before I had a chance to ask. :D

It is quite amazing that the Redline oil is cleaning up what was left behind so much. I have a feeling it's a combination of the new type of oil and your change in driving habits (you mentioned lots of short trips in past vs more highway now).

I too agree that the current designation of "synthetic oil" is ridiculous. I wish there was some way to know what combination of group 3,4,5 oils were in a given bottle.

Keep in mind the 3/26/2017 picture is one year into mostly beltway driving with dealer group 3 changed as always at 3K and crud at this point is rock hard. So definitely the dealer group 3 oil was doing nothing to remove any crud it put there in the first place even with mostly highway miles.

Picture today is 1 year 9 months later since this picture of which the last 14 months and 27K miles has been group 5 Redline. I discovered the crud when the rear cam seal leaked in 2016 and I had to add oil for the first time in this car's life. I was appalled!!!!

In person the Ester based oil has softened the rock hard crud under the cap and it seems to be melting away like candle wax melting. June.

P.s. Added a photo taken now.

My 2000 V70R has those grilles and I think the V70 base I sold also had them. Great idea to stop dropping stuff in but a real pain if you want to use a funnel so as to not splash oil on the top of the engine while filling!

It has always been my theory that lots of city driving and short trips are what cause sludge build up. All my family's vehicles have spent 90% of there life highway driving with 3k change intervals on dino oil (only my Volvo gets the good stuff), and none of them suffered from sludge build up.

Also, it is my understanding now that additives are really what makes a good oil. A G3 oil with lots of good additives will outperform a G4 oil with next to no additives. So if you are going to pay the extra money for G4 or G5, make sure you are also getting good additives and detergents.

I wish FCPEuro stocked redline motor oil. I'd be willing to try just for warranty returns. The price of this oil makes that policy worth the extra trouble shipping it. So far all I see is Motul 300V but their site says its racing oil and not good for daily driving.
