Passenger seat belt "locked" '05 XC90

Post by ktg9534 »

Hey all, great site, already found some helpful stuff, but I have one issue I could not find any info on. The passenger seat belt is locked and it wont pull out of the door frame. (poor wife has to sit in the back seat) It is not buckled, just randomly one day just locked up in its fully retracted position. Is there a trick to getting it to release?..I have already tried pulling and pushing every which way on it. It looks like there is an access cover near the bottom of the wall, but I am scared to pull it off and not be able to get it back on.

Thanks
Kenny

I think your only recourse is to pull the cover off and take a look at the mechanism itself. You may have to replace it. I'll see if I can find some directions.

My daughter put a rock down the seat belt locking mechanism in the middle row, middle seat of our 2009 XC90. I have reviewed the 4 job aids but they aren't what I'm looking for. Can I simply remove the outer part of the locking mechanism to get the rock out (I can no longer see the rock and the seat belt will not lock now)?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks Jen

Huge thanks for sharing these pdf's!

Using these pdf instructions for guidance to remove and replace the trim panels and seat belt mechanism I was able to successfully resolve the "locked" seat belt issue on my 11 yr old 2007 XC90:

I had previously found an online forum post regarding cleaning out "fibers" from the seat belt retracting mechanism which solved their issue and after getting to the mechanism in my car I discovered the exact same problem.
My "new to me" XC90 was recently bought used from a dealer (who appears to have did a very good job of detailing it) and it now appears that one of the 2 previous owners must have had short haired dog(s) in the car. There were dog hairs and what appeared to be like "lint from a clothes dryer" packed near the bottom of the seat belt take-up spool. After I cleaned out the hairs and lint, the locking up issue was immediately resolved. I also wonder if the lint came from the seat belts rubbing against clothes during driving which then get pulled into the mechanism and released as it winds tight around the spool.

Removing and reinstalling the "B-post" trim was a challenge for me as it did require flexing the parts more than I would have normally expected. I would have likely given up (for fear of breaking them) if I didn't have these pdf's to reference during the process, so I'm very thankful. I had viewed some of the online videos of others doing this but in those videos they didn't appear to need to flex the trim panels as much as I did to get them removed or replaced.
