June wrote: 09 Dec 2018, 07:56 Have you tried to rotate the engine by hand. Could be a bad spot on the flywheel? Or bad bendix on the starter? From the sound I am assuming the engine is not rotating. Ford cars were famous for this 40 years ago. Sometimes by engaging (bumping) the starter for a split second several times quickly would get the starter to engage the flywheel again at least on the Fords with a bad starter bendix. If it is a flywheel tooth than you will have to spin the engine slightly by hand. It is worth a try, June
Thanks, June. I was able to turn the engine over by hand, although I was surprised that it was easier than I had expected, even with a breaker bar. My brother changed three P80 timing belts (two of them mine), and it always looked tougher than what I had experienced.

I tapped the case of the starter, and it engaged a few times. Then it sounded like it was spinning without the bendix popping up.

I tried an inline spark tester, but I couldn't see anything in the sunlight. Also, I'm not sure it was grounded. I'll have to try again.

Admittedly, it was an off-brand. I had hoped to get the OE Bosch starter rebuilt after getting the car running.

I pulled the starter (I'm getting faster at this, at least!) and tested it out of the car. It seems to work, though some of the bendix gear teeth were shiny, as if they had hit/scraped the flywheel but not fully engaged it.

Starter looks fine. You might have to look at the flywheel teeth while someone turns the engine over with a big socket, he reports sadly, looking for unhappiness. Good news is you have friends in Volvo places willing to help pull engines

That's what I'd do next. Just leave the starter out and watch the flywheel as someone turns it over.

The engine really isn't too hard to turn over by hand, though, especially if you're using a breaker bar. I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

Had a productive afternoon. Pulled my swedish car parts heater core installed 5 years ago and finally ran it through the dishwasher. Wish I did that years ago, the smell is completely gone. In addition to pulling the heater core I undid my bypass of the heater hoses and installed a new junction after discovering the old one was missing a vital piece. Holy hell that is a job I never want to do again. Everyone talks about just bypassing the junction with high quality heater hose but I'm willing to give the over engineered junction one more try. Also did the copper washer spacer mod for extra sealing pressure on the O-rings. Seems to be working well, no leaks and I finally have heat again. Before I knew the junction box was bad I had to pull the old O-rings and spacers out. The tool of the day turned out to be a paint can opener.

Just replaced my fuel pump yesterday evening - first time for me, and super messy since the tank was filled the day before... Gunk around the tank opening, fuel everywhere (Volvo did a good job making that spot though, making sure that spill goes away and down to the ground).
New (smaller, of course) pump installed in the plastic frame (?) thingy with some fiddling and improvization, hooked up and car starts and purrs. Dizzy owner, stinky garage, soaked rags and all.

Couldn't find my pipe wrench or oil filter wrench, but someone somewhere posted a trick with the handle end of normal pliers, vice grips and a screwdriver, which works a charm. Oh, and for anyone also noticing that it isn't written straight out anywhere - the "locking ring"/lid around the pump top is screw-on/off. Might be obvious, but it doesn't actually say anywhere. Lefty-loosy, righty-tighty.

Seems like nothing's leaking or catching fire, so I put the things back together and fired the car up - starts, don't know if it drives yet, since I was probably legally high as a kite on fumes yesterday evening. :D

Performed some preventative maintenance on our first Volvo (a 1998 V70, and the one that shuttles the wife and kids) by swapping out our 5-year-old battery with an Interstate (730 CCA!). Cleaned the terminals with a wire brush and added battery terminal protectant.

I also, finally, replaced the serpentine belt — only a couple of years after my brother swapped the timing belt. Used belt conditioner, too.

Nice PM, spouse of MRS Brunocerous. I wonder if we will be able to get parts from the UK after Brakes-it?
