Cleaned up the engine bay today in the R. Not perfect by any means, but it's MUCH better than it was! It had (and somewhat still has) a nasty baked on layer of grease that has a faint smell of a garbage truck. No idea how it got there, but this car was simply driven before I got it... the owner before the previous owner thought he was doing some good to it with some iPd sway bar links and some other things here and there, but he really didn't do much.

I need to order a radiator and heater hoses now since I discovered they're leaking. Maybe one day this will be on the road... it kills me how long this car has taken to get roadworthy.

That's a handsome looking engine bay. What cleaner did you use? I keep thinking of doing this to our V70s, but it keeps falling on the priority list!

Yesterday, I managed to liberate the back seats from the '99 V70 XC. At first, it seemed impossible when the left side wouldn't even budge when pulling on it by hand or trying to lever it with a crowbar. I gave the larger, right side a few tugs, and it popped right up, then the right side followed relatively easy.

Now, to get the seats out of the '00 V70 MT so I can shuttle our kids in the third row! The '00 has been a pain, and, again, the rear seat backs are not budging.

Bruno - You are a god. I have never successfully removed a rear seat from a wagon despite numerous attempts.

Haven't tried pulling any back seats yet... hopefully I won't find a reason to do that any time soon!

That's a good deal on the Rotella. I've always wanted to try that T6 5W40. I've heard great things about it, but I'm still wary just because of the lack of a gas engine rating. It's CJ-4 certified for diesel, but it's no longer API SM as it was a little more than a year ago. I also don't want to damage the cats in any of my cars, Shell stresses that a lot when they've publicly answered questions on using it in gas engines, but they're probably doing that just because the EPA will cry if they don't say anything. Then again, I feel like if there's oil getting to the cat, you've got bigger problems!

And I think if I was getting too much oil in my cat, I would be worried about other things, specifically how did fluffy manage to crawl that far up my exhaust pipe. A few of my buddies are diesel mechanics, and they say full synthetic diesel oil is better for your gas engine than any gas rated synthetic oil you could buy. It is probably perfectly fine, the EPA just doesn't like it. Honestly, the only bad thing I could see happening is if you had a lot of sludge, the extra detergents might break it up and clog the filter.

That's what I always figured too. It's made for diesel trucks, which do a lot of idling for extended periods of time, so you would think the anti-wear and cleaning agents would be nothing but good for a gas engine.

I know Miata guys love the T5 10w30, especially those who track their cars and change their oil after every event. It's great for those engines too because it comes in a more convenient gallon container.

Just ordered the last of the coolant hoses that I haven't replaced yet on the R. I also need to order a radiator... maybe tomorrow. Freaking eEuro wanted to charge me over $20 for shipping just for the radiator, and another $11 for the other stuff I was getting since it was coming from another warehouse. You'd think they would give me free shipping if I'm spending nearly $200!

I'll be ordering the radiator from FCP! $3 more, but free shipping and still a lifetime warranty!

I'm just having a hard time seeing how it could cause harm. I mean, there's no way it could cause more engine wear. Then it wouldn't be good oil. Did some searching and some thinking, and maybe it might harm cats and foul O2 sensors and spark plugs, but if you're burning a lot of oil no matter what kind it is, that's going to happen. Diesel oil generally just means it contains more detergents and additives to support higher pressures and "extreme use", so a turbo'ed gas engine should love the stuff when tearing down a country road. What seems to really be the issue is that the EPA does not want gas engines burning up those additional additives (but in diesels it's okay I guess ).
