He is having problems locating the "CAM Mark"
I am assuming he is looking for the timing marks for the timing belt. The attached is titled "240 timing marks" but applies to all B230F/FT engines.

Hi Bill, I really appreciate the speedy reply. I sent the info to the Mechanic and said to ask you if you knew the location of the Crankshaft Sensor or Engine Speed Sensor? He said he is unable to locate them on this Volvo. The Knoxville Volvo maintenance folks told him the location where it was supposed to be on US Volvo spec cars but the Mechanic told me it was not at that location. Any assistance you can give us on these parts locations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dewayne

The crank position or RPM sensor is mounted in the top of the bell housing. To find the sensor, stand at the left or drivers' side front wing (fender) and look behind the rear of the cylinder head down towards the bell housing . The crank sensor sits in a hole at the very top of the bell housing and has a black 1/4 inch diameter wiring harness leading into it from the bulkhead (firewall) harness. With high mileage cars, it's only a matter of time before they fail. Because of its location the insulation on the wiring often comes apart causing a short circuit.

I am also going to add that on some 1988 740s there wasn't a crank position sensor but there was a Hall switch in the distributor which did the same job.

Let us know what the mechanic finds, please.

Bill.

Hi Bill, It has been a while December 4th that I last sent you a message. The fellow working on my Volvo has not found the problem and it is starting to concern me that it may never be found. As I told you before on the initial day of the problem my wife was driving and I turned on the A/C and I have continued to wonder if the A/C switch or A/C components would have any thing to do with the electrical system. I saw in a wiring diagram that the A/C system was in the electrical line with the fuel pump relay, just wondering? The two things that have been on my mind for the past 2 months is the A/C and a wiring harness problem. If and when we find out the problem I will let you know - It is really frustrating trying to find the problem....Thanks

Still trying to locate the problem with my 1988 740 GLE start problem. I had to remove the car from the fellow trying to repair it he had no clue as to what the problem is. I have a good mechanic working on the car now. He found that the distributor was cracked so we replaced that and are now in the process of checking other parts. When we ran the jump wire test on the fuel pump relay the fuel pump started working but when the relay is in no such luck. The Relay is new I have two, one for a backup, there is no spark getting to the plugs and my friend the mechanic asked if this could be a bad Ignition Control Unit. I have read that these units seldom go bad but there is always that one time. What do you think?

It's frustrating when I spend time searching the internet and FINALLY find a thread describing the exact symptoms my car has and nobody bothers to let anyone know what the solution was. Thanks a freakin lot.

Any news on what happened. My 1990 740 gl is going good through the exact same thing. Replaced the pump, relay, RSR. NO IDEA what is going on.

Having near exact same issue. Only one fusebox by coolant reservoir. Haven't checked hall effect sensor. 1987 GLE. Cranks and cranks but won't turn over! Randomly starts when it wants to. Fuel pump is fine but for some reason doesn't pump when key is turned. This issue is such a PITA and already costed me over $100 with no actual fix. Had some random starting success with the Fuel Pressure Regulator by disconnecting one of the hoses but issue persists. How on earth has no one here fixed this and posted a solution yet!? Ditto - Thanks a freakin lot.

Cranks and cranks usually indicates that the starter is turning the engine over but it wont start. After reading the rest of you post you may want to diagnose the fuel pressure regulator. If you're indicating that you removed the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator was the vacuum hose full of fuel or the hose smelled like fuel?
