Hold off on polishing that R.

A very strong gust of Volvos passing you will clean it off nicely.

Last night. I've never pulled an engine, so this is a milestone for me.

What's the occasion? Swap or did you want to clean the back?

Congratulations!

thanks! it kept blowing out seals and dipsticks, and it burned a ton of oil, even after a PCV overhaul. I figure the rings are toast. not sure how that happened as I don't recall letting it run low on oil; plausibly the several months to a year of dirt road driving around work with a giant hole in the brake booster hose drew in a lot of grit, scoring the cylinder walls.

I got an 02 motor, with the 147mm con rods, and I have a ton of other repairs and maintenance to do while I'm in there (single mass flywheel and R clutch, IPD sway bars, steering rack adjustment, Quaife LSD, CV boots, probably more). it's gonna be a pretty long job, but I think it'll remedy a lot of the car's issues and address some of its performance shortcomings. once it's back on the road I'll get good sticky tires and maybe swap in a bigger turbo.

He's halfway through.

Jdawg....if that engine is headed for scrap , could you give that brass stopcock othe back cooling pipe a twist to see of ot comes out easily? I've never had the guts to take mine out for coolant flushing and ever read anyone using it. I'm curious.

Still got that third seat BRUNO...heated too.

Hope to sneak into garage over lunch and see if Evita S70 engine has freed up.

Nice! I'd love to pull the engine out of my R just to clean things up and replace one or two things, but it seems like overkill. Especially since I already swapped out the trans from the bottom.

I actually drained coolant from the block on my R using that valve, it came loose pretty easily. I just wanted to get as much of the old stuff out as I could, I hate flushing coolant. Plus I think there may have been some radiator stop-leak in there, so I definitely wanted all of that junk drained out.

Then again, this is a southern car (well, it was originally sold in Colorado, but it's been in NC/SC for most of its life). Your NY rust may yield different results!

About three days of work up to this point. Now that all the plastic clips are broken and most of the screws are lost, it'll probably go faster next time.

I'm going to move that pipe over to the new engine as the sump cooler pipes are different on the 02 motor. But I'll crack it on the pipe that comes off the new engine. I'd love a good coolant drain - seems like there's coolant hoses everywhere on these turbo cars, and I hate discovering coolant where I didn't expect it.
