Steering noise

Post by Bmac »

Hi,
I have a weird noise coming from the back of the steering wheel. It sounds like a ball bearing race crunching sound. Also does a bit of squeaking. Any thoughts?

First place to check is the bearing at the rubber boot. Follow the column all the way to the floor from the inside driver's side and have a look. If you cannot tell, take a picture of the junction and post. There is a big rubber boot there.

I should have added - the fix is to push the bearing back down. Not much to it. If you do some searching you will find pictures of correct and incorrect. The set up is the same for just about any 2000 to 2010 Volvo (maybe more).

As Herman says, start by checking the small bearing inside the top of the big rubber boot - get it out, clean the rust, some grease and back

The lower steering coupler is known to seize but I haven't heard it getting noisy

See this video at 6:10 - the securing wing bolt torque is 30 Nm (22 ft.lb) important to tighten it correctly. The bearing appears out of the boot (but must stay inside). The boot is secured to the floor with a large spring clip www.youtube.com/watch?v=37u_oQ0Q0Gc

See pic attached.
Mine looks very different to the video. 2003 XC90
It is the knuckle joint in the pic making a noise when rotating

I had the same "loose" feeling in the steering, with 1-2 degrees of free play.
I tightened the pinch bolt on the U-joint coupler. you can see both bolts in the picture. it was the top bolt, inside the car that fixed the looseness. But, I did have to go beyond 22 ft lbs.
Car drives great now.
