I bet if I had just whaled on the starter or on the crank pulley with a wrench, I would have broken a ring and been in a for many pounds and pence.

How long did it take?
About three days of work up to this point. Now that all the plastic clips are broken and most of the screws are lost, it'll probably go faster next time.
HAHAHA I thought that was my patented technique.

Ooooh! Where is Evita's third row? I can't see it in the photo.

It's under the heated rear ejector hatch..

If a stone black S70 pulls in with gears grinding.....its Brother M.

If it's quiet and slushy, it's me

A friend helped me out with his welding skills!
We rebuilt a used angle gear today by plug welding a new sleeve onto it. Added a drain plug, too.
Cleaned it thorougly on the inside. Guestimated the amount of preload on bearing (any suggestions?)

Hope to change out the current angle gear for this rebuilt one soon to get rid of virbation and whining noise. The output flange on current gear has lots of play.

Not a Volvo, but my cousins and I pulled the engine/trans from my old Miata (now my cousin's car) and dropped them into my new Miata (the silver one, formerly my cousin's car) in about 7 hours total over the past 2 days. Running and driving in about 4 hours from starting on the silver car! It's almost like we've done this once or twice...
Pics are in reverse order, but you get the idea.

You can see the two holes in the oil pan on the engine that came out of the silver car. The seller claimed he didn't see any oil coming out. Riiiight....

Nice save abscate! I have actually used slow-mo on the belts before, but you need a decent camera and you have to hold it pretty still if you don't have hardware image stabilization, or else it comes out pretty bad.

My go to engine flush when i worked on old tractors was a proprietary mix of diesel fuel and kerosene, though that was back when those were cheap. Now I would probably just use the cheapest oil at wally world / local farm supply store.

Sold it. Mark drove down from Vermont and picked up Dirk on the way. They left with the car and a stash of parts. Nice to meet two fellow Volvo enthusiasts. I'll miss that car, but a bum left knee kept telling me it was time to let it go. A long daily commute with a clutch was taking its toll.

We bought the car (a '98 V70 base, with stick) in September 2004 with 73,236 on the clock and sold it at 349,920. Had the car just over 14 years. Tried to look after it and replaced the engine after a burned exhaust valve at 229,500. I think it could easily run to 500k + if Mark can keep it away from the deer.
