P80 Is starter bracket 9442201 necessary? (Obsoleted in 2002)

Hello, I recently changed the starter on my 2000 Volvo s70. In order to get the old starter out I had to take out a bracket mounting the back of the starter to the engine block. After putting in the new starter I realized I had to get these two nuts out of the old starter holding he bracket onto it. Long story short the nuts were frozen on and there’s no way I can get them out and i can’t get the bracket off the old starter without taking them out. Is the bracket even necessary? Some people says it gives it ground or whatever but I sharted it 3 times already no problems so can I go without it? Does the bracket help vibration? Help!

Long story short the nuts were frozen on and there’s no way I can get them out and i can’t get the bracket off the old starter without taking them out.

Brush then with a wire brush, give then a long soak in Liquid Wrench penetrating oil. Use a triple plated box end wrench to turn them or better yet a Craftsman Extreme Grip.

Is the bracket even necessary?

Volvo engineers don't waste material. Support brackets are there to support the weight and take some of the load off other supporters. In this case the starter mounting bolts. Which are under enough stress already.

Newer cars are so precision engineered today you can't get away with leaving things out like you could cars from the 80s and before.

In 2002, apparently they either changed the starter/mounts/bell housing as....

Remove the front screw for the starter motor bracket.
Starter motor bracket withdrawn during model year 2002.
Disconnect the connector and cable for the solenoid.
Remove the screws (2 pcs) that hold the starter motor to the transmission.
Remove the starter motor.

They didn't change anything, they just dropped the bracket.

Update

My volvo starter on my parts 1999 was brand new, and had no provision for the starter bracket.

I couldn't find a part number for this in Lisle or on my old crusted part. If anyone has one, please post here so I can title reference the thread

Found it in the Volvo Parts Catalog. Part Number: 9442201 and you can still get new ones for $8.70.

My tested one, covered with used engine oil to prevent corrosion, is only $18.70
