I'm working on my son's 2006 S80 2.5T FWD. The inner CV boots are off on both sides and the joints appear to have contamination at the least.
I ordered replacement axles from the corner parts store and pulled the driver side axle to find that the transmission side of the new axle was not the same as the old (new was "female" while old was "male"). Looking on the internet, there is not clear information on which axles are the correct ones or how to figure out which to choose. Viscous? Non-viscous? Who knows? One post here on MVS said that if the passenger side axle has two sets of inner splines, it is viscous. I don't see two sets of splines, but the wrong part I ordered before was labeled "non-viscous." The attached photo is the transmission end of the driver side axle.
Is this something the dealer can clarify? Voodoo? Tea leaves?

Try tascaparts.com and enter your VIN (you can call them). Otherwise try another site that asks for VIN or call the dealer for the part number and price.
I had good luck with axle from AZ for my 2004 S80 NA. Was perfect fit and so far no issues.
Price was $100 per axle.
I'm going to rebuilt the original Volvo axles that I pulled out, so in case the after market ones give up, I can easily swap them back in.

I ended up getting axles from Voluparts in Atlanta, who deal only in Volvo parts. Raxles didn't have any at all, and Axles Unlimited was as uncertain as I was. Bill at Voluparts sent me the following information:
Bill's prices were reasonable - some of the best I'd seen - and his shipping was amazingly quick. Everything looks great with the parts I got. I highly recommend him. http://store.voluparts.com/all 06s have a 5 cylinder motor in them. No 06s have viscous couplers - only the early 6 cyl. ones might have one on the rt. side.
