1995 5spd trans slips while parked in 1st

Post by tysauce1986 »

Recently acquired a 1995 850 GLT wagon 5spd manual. When I park the car it must be in reverse with the parking brake on or it will roll. Dont think this could be a fluid problem. But i'm really not sure where to even start. Any ideas?

Parking brakes should hold the car on any hill you can drive on. On a steep hill engine compression will be insufficient to hold A MT car.

Stop car with foot brake, continue to hold foot brake
Apply parking brake to hold
Shift into first or park
Release foot brake

Set wheels to curb on steep hills or use chocks.

Parking brakes on Volvos are drum type , applying internal to the rear brake disk rotor. They need to be opened up and inspected on new to you car, the brake linings delaminates with age,

They are also manually adjusted and Will need such adjustment about every 2-3 years..I would start there.

That's probably a bad clutch. Is there oil coming from between the edge and transmission?

Engine needs to come out or transmission dropped. About 10 hours labour

The adjustment for the park brake is under a flap in the central console; very easy to get to.

How many clicks are you getting before handbrake reaches top of travel?
Anything more then 6 clicks requires immediate adjustment.

The load on clutch is much higher moving the car and loses mechanical advantage as you go up to progressively higher gears. Long before it would slip holding the car on level ground you would have slip up a hill in 4th or 5th gear. I'd be looking at engine compression if this car has no issues in higher gears with slipping clutch if you get into throttle.

Parking brakes with burnt shoes or partly broken away park brake shoes will have little force to hold car.

A 1995 will have parking brake adjusters as star wheels inside the brake drums which have to be adjusted before the cables to get the shoes close to the drums.
