On the rear doors the 5 1/4" speakers don't fit "perfectly".
What I did was solder a pigtail wire onto the speaker and then drilled a hole into the side of the plastic cone to route that pigtail through. The teminals on the factory speakers protrude through the cone itself and there is no aftermarket speaker that has that type of terminal arrangement.
I then routed my pigtail wires through the hole in the cone and mounted the replacement speaker to the cone with sheet metal screws.
At this point I had to drill holes in the sheet metal around the perimeter of the original speaker cutout hole to allow the sheet metal screws that I mounted the new speaker to the cone with to recess into the door.
The next step is to make the splices between the pigtail wire and the factory wires.
Lastly, mount the "cone" back into the door with the factory hardware and pop the grill back on.

I will take some for you but it will be Wednesday before I can do it. I'm out of town on a job and I don't have either the Volvo or a camera with me. If I forget bump the thread and remind me!

I dropped my T-25 torx bit somewhere in my son's 850 when I was changing out his timing belt and I have yet to replace it so this is limited. It should help you out though.

The OEM speaker is mounted via the torx screws circled in red. Remove the OEM speaker and then mount the replacement speaker into the plastic cone more or less as shown with the yellow circles. I then scratched the paint on the door with the new screws to create a drilling guide and popped 1/4" holes so that my new screws would recess into the doors. From there use the OEM torx screws to re-mount the plastic cone back into the door. You obviously need to wire the speaker first and route the wiring so that it doesn't get caught in the power window frame.
Hope that helps,

In my case the original housing was plastic - they may have changed it to a metal housing at some point. I used some self tapping sheet metal screws to secure the after market speaker into the housing. Even if it is metal I think the technique would be the same.ok, let me get this straight. you took out the old speakers and drilled holes on to the metal housing it came out of to have the after market speakers fit?

OK well i have a 94 850 turbo wagon and i bought 2 Sony 5 1/4" speakers and they did not fit at all in the front! they were to small for the plastic speaker holders i measured it and it was like almost 6" and i don't have any rear deck speakers i dunno if the previous owner took it out but its a wagon were would u even put them there is no deck like a sedan. so i no for a fact that the 5 1/4" are for the 850 sedan and not the turbo wagon! so if any one nos what sizes for ALL the speakers in a 1994 Volvo 850 turbo wagon i would appreciate it along with allot of other people from what i am seeing.
