2002 V70 X/C sprang a leak

Post by Mike Langlois » Sat Jan 26, 2019 7:32 am

My 2002 V70 X/C Sprung a leak last night while idling in the driveway. I was setting Gain levels on a new Audio system, when steam stared coming out of the hood. Looks like a leak on the back of the motor; I saw coolant on the turbo? It was getting dark (still is this morning!) so I could not locate the leak. I know the cooling system was just flushed with a generic coolant; Is there a preferred (correct ) coolant I should use when refilling after the repair. I am striving for a stage Zero car and utilize OEM fluids and parts. Any idea what component of the cooling system resides behind the motor (by the exhaust side)? Putting it on jacks later today...

Turbo has cooling lines with rubber connector hoses. You also have the heater lines that run from bell housing down and behind to the firewall to go inside to heater core.

Since the coolant is all over the turbo intake area, I'll start at the turbo. Hope this is quick and easy. I am setting up a NICE stereo in the car, just got it insured and am transferring title to my self next week. I am ready to drive it!

The hoses for heater are in that area with a connector hose for turbo coolant line. A long 1/4 drive extension and a 7mm socket to get that inlet pipe off turbo is in you future. Nothing is accessible down in that hole with that hose from MAF/air cleaner in the way.

Heater hoses are okay. I can see coolant dripping down under the car; straight off the angle gear- directly under the turbo. I have a Picture, but haven't figured out attachments yet. Any guidance after removing the Turbo Inlet? I have done that a few times....

This is an X/C model and I am still trying to pinpoint the leak. The leak is located at the drivers side rear of the motor and is beginning to look like the solid metal coolant tube that runs along the back of the motor. I am tracing the coolant lines from the turbo and they seem to be metal all the way. Darn Angle gear is in the way! The water is spraying on the discharge coupler of the turbo. Anyone have a diagram of the cooling system on a 2002 V70 X/C?

Found it! Small hose connecting a metal tube on the rear of the block to a cooling line; located directly under the cam shaft position sensor.
