GoPro on a low quality control arm
Got these new, yes new, control arms on Rockauto to try and solve a swerving issue i had on wifes XC90. Did both sides. The swerving was not fixed, stumped i started looking into other things and today decided to just put a camera under there and here what i saw.
I'll be buyin a new set of Meyle HD's from IPD

That’s insane. It’s almost criminal that these are being sold...

Get the Volvo Genuine stuff. It costs more but it lasts much longer...

Re: GoPro on a low quality control arm
this thing has been such a pain, and now my xc70 is gettin issues.
06' XC90:
-AWD only works when its freezing outside, and usually only works for a few miles. Will work again after an ignition restart.
-the obvious swerving issue
-CD player makes god awful noises every time you start it for about 30 seconds
-oil leaks horribly, but stopped recently. either quakerstate high mileage works or its just out of oil
-both front windows now go back down after they fully close when using the auto up
-ac has a leak, full charges last 4-6 weeks
-exhaust and turbo coolant lines could crumbled at any time
04' XC70:
-AWD doesn't work at all. I have a ABS-0022 right front sensor code. too cold to investigate lately
-front rotors are pretty much done, will check out that abs-0022 while im in there
-pcv is completely clogged, hated that job on the 90, dragging my feet to do it again
-burns oil or something, does not leak but goes through a gallon a month with no smoke
-cant lock tailgate or use rear wiper because the new one i got when window broke is wired backwards. that was funny when i used wiper and i swiped the license plate
-only 2 coil packs left to change, love when those go, because its usually at the end of work day before 25 mile drive home
-seat heater quit
-been through 3 window washer pumps
-exhaust and turbo coolant lines could crumbled at any time
Other than those things they have bee great i guess. Combined 342k miles

Re: GoPro on a low quality control arm
Wow, that's impressive. Thank you for sharing!
FYI, I have had really poor results with Meyle. On my XC90, I replaced them after ~10k miles. Some people like Lemforder, but I will only put on blue-box volvo control arms now. I'm tired of doing it again in short order, and the blue-box Volvo ones have lasted me a decent time. (Up to 42k miles now, and still performing well.)

Re: GoPro on a low quality control arm
The arms are probably OK if you press out the bad bushings and press OEM or Genuine bushings in their place.
I had squishy genuine bushings on our newly acquired 2006 XC90. Visually they looked fine. Mind you they were at least the 2nd set by 100K miles as they had yellow alignment marks painted on for fitment. XC90s chew through front bushings even when genuine.
They made the steering dart to the right under brakes. All good since I pressed in some new bushings.

Re: GoPro on a low quality control arm
This video makes the solid polyurethane look appealing... Maybe even Delrin in the front...

Re: GoPro on a low quality control arm
That video is a bit scary.....
The window problem is easily fixed. Just need to reset them.
Open the fuse box in drivers door, locate the fuse for each door window and do them individually.
Auto down each window and while it is in motion, pull out the fuse before it hits bottom of travel.
Then replace fuse and open and close the window ar least two full cycyles of up and down.
Note that auto down and up functions will no longer work until you complete the two cycles.
This procedure resets the upper and lower stop limits for the auto window function.
Should work fine after this procedure.
The window bouncing back down on auto up function drove me crazy till I did the reset.

Re: GoPro on a low quality control arm
Nice video. As mentioned, skip the Meyle HD. Maybe get the Ipd HD but again, it's risky. Lemforder should be better or if the car stays longer, OEM. As I was saying in a video, the amount of rubber doesn't matter on suspension parts, if the rubber quality is cheap - note that all rubbers look the same but the composition can differ enormously. Producing a rubber compound that lasts is an art and comes with a price.
