Who made Volvo's original exhaust systems in north-west Europe (UK) around the turn of the century?

The original system on my 2002 S60 lasted for 12 years. I had the rear box/muffler replaced in 2014, I think that's gone rotten now after only 5-years*! I feel it's probably worth replacing the whole lot from the cat back and I'd like to use the original manufacturers as their stuff lasted.

*Bits of the exhaust system on my previous GM car needed replacing every 18-months so this is still quite good.

The stories I've seen on swedish forums repeatedly show that there are no quality replacements available and the most sensible thing to do is just get the cheapest possible replacement and keep as much or the original quality exhaust as possible. Or have someone make a custom stainless system for you.

The original system on my S80 2004 is a German company with a strange long name that starts with Z. I noticed the markings once on the muffler and converter while my mechanic had the car in the air. In my car's case the system is still factory and whisper quiet. June

I recall seeing stainless steel cat-back systems for turbo models.
If the pipe diameter was the same, why wouldn't one of those work?
The downstream O2 sensor is in the cat's pipe.

PERSONAL NOTE: Of course the local exhaust guy near me (with whom I got along handsomely) pulled up stakes.

The cheapest is indeed go genuine used, get one from Ebay, Florida and forget about it. The original mufflers lasts longtime even after their exterior skin/heatshield has rotten away - the muffler itself is still doing well. My 2003 has seen canadian winters and still pefect except for the outer skin.

For some mysterous reason, the replacement ones fron Volvo last very little -surely not the same company as the original ones

As mentioned, a muffler shop can fit in there a standard shaped ss quality muffler. Dont replace the whole cat back, just the rear muffler

Read this and keep your eye on what grade of Stainless Steel the replacement exhaust is made of. Avoid the ones that are vague about what the system is made of.
