91 740 Turbo - dude, where's my turbo?

Post by villagepc »

New project. Looks like the previous owner yanked out the turbo bits... OR its an engine swap. For the b230ft gurus out there - how will I be able to identify if this is a motor swap, or the OEM motor just with the turbo goodies yanked out?
Head marking?
Block marking?
ECU number?

Pardon my new-ness to this series, most of my joy's been with the 850/V70s.

Hm, ok. I was hoping for something more definitive. Hopefully the results will be clearly obvious.
From my research thus far -
Non - Turbo - 189-219 psi (13.2-15.3 kg/cm )
Turbo - 156-185 psi (11-13 kg/cm )
...with typical results around 160-165 psi for an "ok" turbo block, and 175-200 for an "ok" NA block.
Thanks 93regina!

I have a 1993 940 with a 1984 B23F engine I rebuilt installed. An experienced Volvo-ist, or mechanic, can see the valve cover on this B23F engine was not seen on B230F engines, which were OEM equipment in 1993.

A compression check would also determine this was the high compression B23F...that came with automatic transmissions.

As old as these vehicles are, a person has no idea what previous owners have done. Yes, if you check computer box (ECM), you would know if that got changed out.

I can see in the pic that is not a turbo exhaust manifold. That's not to say it's a turbo engine with a non turbo manifold.

But I will tell you though that in my early Volvo days I did buy a turbo 245 that according to the seller had a bad turbo. The turbo cartridge had been removed and a blocking plate installed. The car was slower than slow. Much more than a non turbo engine. A $40 used turbo and I was back in business. 2-3 times more power.

A compression test just may give you the info as to whether it's a turbo block or not. There may also an FT cast into the block. Also, if it is a turbo block there will be a turbo drain hole drilled into the block straight down from where the turbo would have been just above the oil pan.

39`, that would be a warm front here. It's a balmy 2° here in KY this morning. A buddy of mine just moved to Pensacola last week. He moved just in time.

Yeah Lumm.. I saw that too... The side of the block has a threaded plug in it too, where I was asked to look...so it seems i may be in luck!
I will run a compression test once I find the toolbox with my gauge.. :/

I will have more time in a cpl days to do check behind the motor mount etc.

Yep. there would be a boss that is threaded for turbo oil feed that would have to have been plugged, The drian tube hole should be on block just behind mid point and just above the oil pan joint. Is the intercooler still there?
