Issues in Extreme Cold

Hello,

I have a 2017 XC90 T8 Inscription. I just purchased it as a certified pre-owned. When the weather dips below freezing, the second row doors won't open (it seems like they are frozen shut) and today, I went to get gas. The gas door opened, but the nozzle wouldn't go in. It seemed like the "trap door" was frozen shut. Is this a known issue? I love this car, but I am surprised at these issues for such a reputable brand and significant price tag.

Gas cap tight? Good seal around the gas cap?

It is surprising for a new car but I'm thinking, was there a rain period and perhaps some water got on the doors seals when we open them in rain and not has frozen up ? I often times have this issue in such conditions, I just make sure the door is unlocked, grab the handle and pull with moderate force (not too much so I don't damage anything) and keep this pulling for 5-10 seconds. It gives up and opens. Reason why after a rain of melted snow, if the temperature drops overnight I like to go at the car and open/shut close all doors before they freeze up.

Same thing can happen with the gas door, after hearing the unlocking buzz, may try to 'gently' pry with a butter knife but wrap the knife with some cloth or it will damage the paint

Maybe ask Volvo if they sell something to rub on these rubber trims, but careful not to use something random as it may damage the rubber in the long term. Perhaps something with silicone (without petroleum products)

There have been quite a few occurrences of locks freezing here in Sweden on these and the other new 90 series cars. Iirc they've updated the lock design and some people have had them, that is the entire lock mechanism in the door, replaced while others have got away with lubing them.

Thank you everyone for your advice! I took it to the dealership, and they literally did every single thing mentioned above including order new locking mechanisms. I appreciate the help! Jen

Here in the Eastern US, we're in a zonal pattern of lots of rain 2-4 inches and then freezing temperatures. I'm having similar problems with two of my cars. If you can, try parking on a slight incline, which will allow the water to drain easier than on a flat surface.
