01-XC Emissions - Low Evap Leak

Post by JoeMc »

Recently saw some info on another forum with this link viewtopic.php?t=64017. Was wondering if this info was same as or totally different for our 01? This code has been present for many, many years. I've installed new oil mist vapor box on side of block, cleaned the two (large/small) lines to and from it and even had the pan down to make sure passages weren't obstructed "and" cleaned the throttle body (ETM or whatever it's actually called) with no improvement. Oh, of course, new Volvo fuel cap. I'm able to clear the code, drive for 15 miles or so, then go to inspection station to get thru PA emissions and inspection. One time the code came back as soon as the car was pulled in to the station for inspection and the code reader revealed "no codes" = passed inspection!? Also, car runs like a top all the time, just those nagging displays on the dash and notification screen.

Have you checked the purge valve? The fact that your car trips the computer w/n 15 miles (one drive cycle) leads me to think you may have an electrical part problem - the purge valve being the first place I would look. You can try and disconnect the electrical harness and see what happens. Specifically if it codes right away or takes about the same amount of time.

Sorry for not knowing "purge valve"? What, where and how to check? Thanks

It will fit in your palm. Look for one hanging with a bracket on cooling fan. You won't miss it if you remove the fresh-air pipe to the air box.
The valve has two ends for rubber hoses, and a port where sensor connects.
