Mike Langlois wrote: 05 Feb 2019, 18:54 I just spent a few weeks and a few $$ fighting the same sort of problem on a 2002 V70 X/C. Clean it well: take the tires and splash guards off. I cleaned a few times, then the cam seal fell out on the exhaust side. After resealing the Whole motor, Oil pump gaskets (and o-ring?), new power steering reservoir and hoses, new PCV/coolant hose (the $210.00 unit only available at Volvo), new PCV box/ hoses, the front right drive shaft, fuel injection o-rings/ hose and assorted cooling hoses, the leak seems to be solved. Why do we do this?
Must be back breaking doing all that in one project!

This project only includes dropping the oil sump, oil cooler, timing belt job, water pump, thermostat, RAD hoses, coolant reservoir hoses, front crankshaft seal, and the oil pump gasket & O-ring.

Last night I let it idle for 10min with the BG109 Engine Performance Restoration added, drained dark oil from sump, dumped 2 quarts of diesel into filler cap and dipstick, and drained distilled water from RAD.

After letting the oil sump and RAD drip overnight I'm ready to start removing the parts today. Before I do the timing belt, oil pump, and water pump I feel safer in dropping the oil sump then re-installing it after cleansing it and throwing on new seals. I'll let the anaerobic sealant dry overnight before I remove the oil pump and water pump. As noted in the VIDA instructions don't damage the splines nor rotate the crankshaft rod when removing the gear.

Being a later 2005+ engine I've read the tensioner needs to be turned CW until the indicator is past the middle, then CCW until it's back into middle, then tighten center nut to 20NM. Any hints on rotating the allen wrench? Do I start at 11:00, rotate to 3:00, then finish ~2:00 O'Clock?

Dropped the oil sump today.

Not too dirty so only took 1 hour to clean. I'll post pictures of the clean pan tomorrow before I reinstall it.

The Oil Cooler hoses look fairly new with new worm type clamps. They also had no heat shield.

Do you think these hoses were already replaced by previous owner?

I would say yes. The factory has both heat shield and they are attached together with a plastic clamp to prevent the, from chafing on the axle shaft , too

I would replace the drug store clAmps with ABA or Volvo ones with closed serrations, or, even better, Oetiker clamps

This pic answers a question about the oil cooler, you can remove it without draining the sump. The oil cooler lines on the biscuit type cooler run off the oil filter housing

Another factor leading to oil cooler previously removed was this sealant I had to scrape off with a blade.

I also have suspicion the oil sump was previously dropped. In the top right of the sump there was a good amount of crud.

This is where the 2 bolts cannot be removed from below because of the subframe blockage. They need to be removed from the right wheel well. The mechanic obviously didn't give these bolts enough torque during installation.

I agree because a good amount of oil dripped out of the oil cooler even though the sump was empty.

After mounting the oil sump I proceeded with the timing belt. I lined up the Camshaft markings with the timing cover but I couldn't catch any markings with the Crankshaft? After removing the crankshaft harmonic balancer and tensioner I could get a clearer view of the crankshaft gear. Still cannot find any markings on the splines. I kept my eye on the crankshaft while rotating it 360deg but all the splines appear identical.

Here is a closeup view.

Are these the actual markings for the Crankshaft gear? If so I'll need to rotate CCW a notch.
