2005 S80 Window Track Repair Using Aftermarket Sliders 3509416 Topic is solved

This may save somebody a bunch of aggravation....

Once again I've had to repeat a repair due to using cheap aftermarket parts. When will I ever learn?!?!

The replacements that I found on Amazon.com were so "favorably priced" that I couldn't pass it up. When I snapped the bargain sliders onto the ends of the lift arms I noticed they fit awfully tight. So tight that I was afraid they would bind and hinder the smooth up/down operation of the window. So I decided to open up the holes a bit with a rat tail file. I got them to fit a bit better and thought I was home free.

Well, fast forward several months and the window got off track again. This time I picked up a couple replacements at the dealer and did a little comparison. Sitting side-by-side the the OE and the cheapy looked reasonably close to the same. However, using a tapered punch and some duct tape to compare the inner diameters, I was able to verify a small but very significant difference. See photos below. Also note the apparent difference in the quality of plastic. Heck, they couldn't even get the retaining clip right. I had to use the OE clip on the cheapy sliders to even get them to work at all.

Thanks for the photos.

I have found over the years that Dealer stuff (BMW, Volvo etc.) are worth it for inexpensive items such as:
- Engine Seal, in this case Corteco is OEM.
- Window clips as you mentioned are so cheap $5/each at dealer. So why gamble and waste time again and again.
The time you lose taking the trim panel out etc. is not worth the $1 saving!

According to the online listing it can cause reproductive harm. I'm not sure what people are doing with it that it would cause reproduction harm.

Good find. I do have the aftermarket ones for about 2 years now, I take care not lowering the windows when stuck in cold weather. I'll grab a few of genuine ones for spare next trip to the junk yard. Perhaps I'll pull them from the rear windows - chances are to be in better shape.

Not so sure those things are good junk yard purchases

I forgot to mention also that they really run smoother/faster with some light weight lithium grease smeared deeply into the "U" channels. They'll probably last longer too if there is less friction between them and the channel.

Some silicone spray in the fore and aft felt channels helps also.
