NooB here...first post

145,000 miles on my T5 wagon

Just finished replacing the radiator on my T5 - this is the first time I have been led astray by the simple instructions from Alldata DIY (web based service manuals)

Moderate leak from RHS of radiator low down - note that the under engine pan pools coolant that drips so location of drip does not always correspond to location of radiator hole

The cooling group "sandwich" in the front of the car has three components - A/C condenser, intercooler for HP turbo, and radiator.

I found it much easier to electrical disconnect, hose disconnect (I cut since I was replacing) then remove two M10 (13mm head) bolts that allow the entire assembly to drop below car (Car on ramps)

From here, the fan housing and fan can be removed (very nasty Torx screws into plastic), then the M6 (10mm) screws holding the condenser, intercooler, and radiator can be removed from each corner of the sandwich. Its much easier below than trying to get these out in the very limited space with the radiator in position in the car.

Elapsed time - 3 hours to drain and remove, 3 to replace.
I used an exact OEM replacement which was 180 USD - it did have the brass ports for the transmission cooler which I did not use on the T5 stick

The Alldata DIY told me to remove the turbo cooler lines too - these did not attach to my radiator so I skipped that step. On my car, these lines come off the coolant hose right below the overflow reservoir.

New radiator, filters, oil change and she is purring like new again... :D :D :D

On edit - corrected A/C evaporator to condensor in post

Congrats on your repair. It's a great feeling when you accomplish something big like that you've never attempted before. It does seem a bit daunting at first.

I dropped mine out the bottom of my T5, but it wasn't easy in any way. Removing the radiator fan gave me a lot more room, and then I kinda wondered if it would have come out the top as well. The dang SAS air pump (only 98 model -70's had em) got in my way.

Thanks! No way mine was coming out the top with the fan attached. On the 1999, the throttle body horn severely obstructs the top route, and you sure don't want to screw that up. 2000 USD plus! :o

One additional safety tip I left off...

EG (coolant) is extremely toxic to house pets, and it tastes sweet to them, so please be careful with your old coolant and dispose of immediately.

Well , it looks like Ill be tackling this job again, 3+ years later. Contrary to my post, I used a Nissens on this job, which I don't think I will do again.

Also those bolts on the radiator are M8 13mm, not M10 as written above.

Im really glad I used SS when I replaced them

:D :D :D

Im also blessing my chariot for failing 150 yards from home.

:D :D :D :D :D

Hey - this thread goes back to my very first post on MVS as NooB!!!

Notes on this job

The two mounting bolts that hold the radiator 'ears' to the car are often really badly corroded. I broke one of the body nuts in 2013, and replaced the hardware with SS bolt/nut/washers through - which saved my life in 2017

I got rid of the Volvo M6 clips which hold the condenser/radiator/intercooler sandwich together and also replaced the hardware with SS M6 - again saving my life. I needed forceps to hold the nuts to get them started, and I bored two 1 inch holes into my radiator cowling to make access to the bolt heads easier too. A 1 inch cap from Lowes closed those off.

Finally, I replaced the rusted fan housing bolts with SS sheetmetal to ease that rusty fastener pain.

I had to replace this radiator again in 2017

I believe root cause was my failure to firmly attach the radiator mount bolts, allowing the radiator to stress the end tank crimps. User fail.

Our Nissens replacement made it just over 6 years before it sprung a leak in the side.

In taking it back out, the stupid bolt welded to the frame broke the weld and just decided to spin around in place. Discovered that after wrenching at the darn bolt for 5 minutes.

Hey there, welcome to MVS!
