400hp Volvo 850 platinum edition wagon

Post by Kolbrick »

I'm new to this forum and figured I'd share a build thread for those of you that are interested. I'm 20 years old and have been saving for a long time to build this car, I've went through 3 autotragics in the past year 🙄

The mods the car had prior to tearing it apart was IPD full catless exhaust, IPD turbo controller valve, rebuilt td04hl 16t angled flange turbo, DO88 front mount intercooler, Reverse intercooler piping, All snabb boost piping, IPD sway bars, Koni lowering springs, brand new polyurethane bushings all over the suspension, StopTech big brake kit 2 piece rotor 4 piston caliper brakes. The car itself Is a 1996 Volvo 850 turbo Platinum Edition wagon with approx. 190k miles.

The manual swap came together when I found a 1997 Volvo 850 5 speed for 500$. I now have the motor and transmission pulled out of that car, and have my wagon in the garage with the motor and autotragic pulled out. The block itself is at the machine shop right now, and my parts list goes as follows, please feel free to give me any suggestions or ask any questions, as this is alot to take on at one time.

Engine

• NA Intake manifold 960 throttle plate
• ARD R exhaust manifold
• ARD Td04 22t billet turbo with 9 blade turbine
• Snabb fresh air intake piping kit
• Vast tuning
• E85 compatible fuel pump with Bosch 650cc injectors
• New intake/exhaust valves
• 5 angle valve job/cylinder hoaning
• Stiffer valve springs
• Enem 35-78-000 camshafts
• Glyco main bearings/rod bearings
• K1 Forged connecting rods
• Weisco forged pistons 81.25mm ( possibly 81.5mm waiting on machine shop )
• ARP 2000 head bolts
• CBV blockoff plate Tial blowoff valve
• MSD coil
• Looking at a MishiMoto catchcan
• D088 aluminum radiator to go with the intercooler

Transmission

• M56L 5 speed swap
• Spec stage 3+ clutch and pressure plate (part number SO133F)
• Gripper 40/65 Ramp Limited Slip Differential
• Stick shift axles

I'm hoping to have this done by April/May and by June have the tune completed and shooting for the 350-400whp range. Feel free to give me some feedback/questions or tips on my build. :D

Impressive list. I'm interested in how you came to choose the 22T turbo over the other options for this. What tires will you put on?

Well as far as the Td04 family goes this is the biggest turbo at 50mm inducer, and with how much I'm already doing to the car i don't want to have to get a new downpipe fitted/fabricated and have to worry about clearance issues. One day i'll have the engine sleeved and run a big frame :D Continental DWS06 W speed rating (168+mph) is what is on it now, i'm hoping with the LSD i wont have too much problems with 20-40mph rolls. If i go to the strip i'm going to try it on street tires and maybe stepup to slicks. Spinning the tires is always safer for the axles though  Whats some common turbo options you see on these builds?

All seasons? That's a lot of power, speed and cornering capability for those. Speed rating is fine, but all-around staying on the street is what I'd worry about.

I had DWS and they were fine for what they were.

Usually you see 19T or K24 etc., OEM turbos in other words.

Get yourself a set of Pilot 4S, you won't regret it. I made the step up from good AS tires to Pilot Super Sports and it was a massive improvement.

What have you got going on for dampers?

Koni FSD shocks/struts, they work great. I'll have to look into those pilots. I have a set of adjusting Koni sports, but they are way to harsh of a ride even on the softest setting. If I go to a track I would definitely run the Koni sports.
