The job is the belt, idler, and tensioner or else the tech has to eat the sticker

I still have the OEM water pump with good bearings so feel free to pick it up so you can throw the timing belt back on. I live in Hamphshire county.

xc70rider: He had the head machined and fixed the valves himself with a compressor he baught on amazon.
Great, I'll look that up.

E-mailed this company inquiring about rebuilt heads or rebuilding my current head: https://www.cylinder-heads.com/
supehrman: Easist way to tell if the valves are bent is to put on a water pump and retime the engine. Then do a leak down test or compression test to see if you suffered damage.
Rojer that and thanks for the other ideas too.
abscate: I've got a brand new Aisan pump I'll loan to test, if you keep just replace in kind.
That's really generous, thank you! I'm going to need some more time to digest all this info and watch the procedures, but that sounds like it could be a good way to go!
june: Unfortunately Volvo has the waterpump scheduled for replacement every other belt change. .... That sticker comes in every genuine Volvo belt kit. It is no guarantee the dealer actually changed it fyi.
Well, I hope people consider replacing it earlier after reading this story. In my case, I'm pretty confident that the belt was actually done. Car appears to have been fed synthetic oil all its life and was one owner. The battery is an OEM Volvo from 2014.
oragex: I am interested to find out if yours is the original pump or at least an Aisin brand one. .... As for the timing belt, it is very hard to push off the cam gears by hand when the tensioner is set
I will do the mirror check you suggest next time I'm up at the yard that the Volvo is now resting in. But I have every reason to believe that the pump is OEM. The previous owner had even put an OEM Volvo battery!

That's what I suspected about timing belt being very tight when properly installed, thanks for confirming.

Thanks for the offer!

I've got to focus on some other parts of life right now, but I'll be coming back to this when I can and see if I can get this Volvo back on the road at a reasonable cost.

Thanks a ton for all the support, this is an amazing community.

FYI, I just spoke with Allied Motor Parts in Atlanta: http://www.alliedmotorparts.com

They said that rebuilding the head including about 10 new valves will be in the $350 - $450 range plus shipping. So for any fellow DIYers out there, that seems like a reasonable option. Pull the head yourself, mail it in (or bring to a local shop), then put it back in yourself.

Still have to research what's involved in re-building the seal. Need special OEM Volvo goop? Or is it a rubber gasket?

Also may have to clean off / polish the engine base and any pistons that got nicked by the valves.

Conventional cylinder head gasket for the block to head, anaerobic sealant for the Cam cover.

Volvo or loctite stuff

Make sure you spec out what valves they use. OEM Volvo with Na fill are $80 each

I've read the water pumps usually last to 200k so yours went a little early. My 2007 XC70 is approaching 127k and I just threw on a new water pump when doing the timing belt, tensioner, and idler.
Here's the thread I was referring to.

He got the water pump at the dealership and it failed 2 years later! My guess the tensioner was over torqued?

I have a soft spot in my heart for X/C Volvo's and heal them for fun. If you want to part with it at a bargain price, PM me. I can arrange transport.
