no heat? no overheating

Post by NYCKID221 »

its my project what can it be? i changed the thermostat last year and flushed the heatercore
previous owner did timing waterpump.

if i start the car and leave it running for 10/15mins or so and then put the heat on
it gets low heat for 5sec or so and then blows cold even if i rev the motor

edited: the top hose when car is running i can press on it and its warm but empty :(

How do you know the top hose is empty?

It may be you have a bad thermostat or an air-lock.

When you refilled the coolant, did you raise the front of the car to help the system burp with the header tank cap off?

Feel close to the metal pipes near the driver feet ( you might have to pull out the trim section) to see if it’s hot or air locked. It will burn you if at full temp so be careful.

That will sort out if it’s a damper or coolant issue

If the water level is very low, it won't circulate into the heater core. The last thing that happens before you over heat is no heat situation. Im not familiar with the 98 tank fill situation, but it goes into the radiator I think. If you haven't run it since a block drain, you have to run it for ten minutes and shut it off to cool. then it will pull coolant from the tank. It won't go in by gravity. It take sever cycles to illuminate all air. So you may be right that the hose feels empty.

Pull the foot trim above the pedals and you will see two metal pipes that deliver coolant to/ from the heater core

Did they offer ECC for that year folks? If so, it sounds a lot like when I had the A->D converters blow which would show all 0's for the motor positions. They would sweep and then leave the blender doors in the full cold position.
